Gaspare De Vito turns from jazz to techno, with ‘Actual Proof’

A deep connection with Jazz is the key element which has characterised the sound and professional life of producer and composer Gaspare De Vito. Influenced from an early stage by his home in Naples and the sounds of the Mediterranean, he was inspired by the freedom to be found in music, and first began to look into the music of different cultures, before later being drawn into the more globalised scene of electronica in early 2015.

His experiments in production and talents as a multi-instrumentalist have led to Vito being voted one of the best saxophonists in Italy, and receiving invitations to a wide variety of international Jazz festivals, including Clusone Jazz Festival, Jazz In it, Sant’arcangelo Jazz Festival, and a host of others. The professional career of Gaspare De Vito has seen the artist work together with other well established musicians, in addition to involving himself both as a member and leader of a number of bands both in and out of Italy.

Together with independent label Frequenza Vito has recently kicked off a fresh self-titled solo project, starting with the release of the EP ‘Actual Proof’. Here two techno tracks are presented that bring to light the artist’s talent when focusing on the more contemporary fields of deep house and ambient.

Altering acclaimed work: Andhim remix Catching Flies’ ‘Opals’

Catching Flies is an artist whose work has drawn the attention of both crowds and critics, receiving praise from major industry players such as Annie Mac and Gilles Peterson. His music gives form to sensations of warmth and majesty, touching on an array of genres including jazz, soul and trip-hop. Catching Flies reputation advanced through live performance alongside acts including Little Dragon and Four Tet. Naturally, expectations were high for his first album ‘Silver Linings’ which finally debuted in early 2019.

Released to positive reception, ‘Silver Linings’ also attracted efforts from other artists to influence and reimagine each of the tracks contained on the LP. Now almost a year on, Catching Flies has collected and arranged exceptional new versions of his original work, announcing ‘Silver Linings Remixed’.

The 14 track EP includes contributions from various creators including DJ Seinfeld and Soundbwoy Killah, each of whom has managed to create something new while retaining the soul each track was first built around.

Our featured remix comes from German duo Andhim; hip-hop induced, sample incorporating, self-styled purveyors of ‘Super House’. The pair has transmuted the downtempo and subtly beautiful ‘Opals’ into a deep house track, resetting the soft mellow melodies into a warped reflection.

Tribe House and growing community: Hamza Rahimtula with ‘Bourj Hammound’

Since founding Wind Horse over a decade ago, New Delhi DJ and producer Hamza Rahimtula has released a number of expressive singles for his pioneering imprint...

Perhaps the most lasting and influential contribution to the electronic music scene from Hamza Rahimtula is Wind Horse Records. Considered one of India’s original House music labels, Wind Horse has been a major supporter of electronic music in the region since 2009. Rahimtula himself has never been far removed from the point of production within the label, having contributed as a featured artist on numerous tracks, collaborating with some key players.

As a musician in his own right, Rahimtula has been engaged in international tours, performing DJ sets brought to life by the culturally potent sound of Latin and Afro beat, entrenched in deep bass rhythms. His debut album ‘Gitano’ was a milestone for Wind Horse, marking their 20th release. That said, regardless of the strength that folk percussion and vocals brought to Gitano, Rahimtula’s talents are diffuse rather than concentrated to a production line style discography; an artist with many collaborations, EPs and singles to his name.

Rahimtula recently set loose two tracks of Tribe house through the Seattle label Viva Recordings, so hit play on lead song ‘Bourj Hammound’ and you’ll uncover that characteristic fusion of rhythm enriched acoustic and artificial influence that warps the air around you.

House tracks made in silence, from HeartWerk’s ‘Distant’

The music produced by HeartWerk tends to be inhabited by night-time visions, possessed by the spirits of House, Acid and Techno. In the past HeartWerk has provided ADSR Collective with tracks weighed down by bass, shifting sequences which play around the edge of your hearing as much as they centre and direct the heavy, resolute beat. With inspirations from the world of Deep House such as Peggy Gou and Harrison BDP, the sound of HeartWerk naturally moves to dark, primal territories.

In these times of isolation producers are being influenced both physically and mentally, and as they experiment and tinker with beats the effect of this entrapment begins to show in their work. This is the environment in which HeartWerk has released the two track EP ‘Distant from You’, on Tulsa Oklahoma’s dance and electronic label ‘U Don’t Dance’.

Leading in with the 5:30 minute track ‘Distant’, we’re presented with faded clashes of industrial samples and muted bass, which are secondary to the higher toned beat line. Along with the melodic synth this beat is the element that pulls the atmosphere towards an astral level, shaded by melancholy. Lo-fi vocal samples complete a track positioned towards light, but restrained in dusk.

George McCarthy’s solid debut sets ears tingling and hearts a flutter

Provided to YouTube by Symphonic Distribution Flutter (Original Mix) · George McCarthy · George McCarthy Flutter ℗ 2019 Floor 13 Released on: 2019-11-29 Auto-generated by YouTube.

Upon doing my research for the elusive George McCarthy I have to say I didn’t come up with much except for the fact that he is a new UK based producer who is fresh out of the gate with a release that is capturing the attention of the biggest taste makers in underground music worldwide right now.

So let’s get straight to it, Flutter is simply a very effective and enjoyable slice of stripped back electro of which I haven’t heard in sometime. A warm, playful and reserved minimalist production that with few ingredients manages to deliver the utmost in personality and danceability. Although McCarthy’s fresh, crisp approach to drum programming is something I am accustomed to, there is something in his treated and gated arrangement of melody which is uniquely him. It’s in the play between the groove and his production techniques where McCarthy finds his voice. While McCarthy has released a track that would work in any club you can see the potential for his sound to become a lot bigger. With interest from some of the biggest labels out there right now we might see this happen sooner rather than later.
