Following their third album, ambient piano duo Grandbrothers connect with renowned group Mogwai

Since 2012 the Grandbrothers have been bringing together their separate disciplines of sound. Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel first met at Dusseldorf university, and the musical partnership that followed chases a balance of Sarp’s talents as a trained jazz pianist and Vogel’s experience working with synthesizers as a both a producer and engineer. The result is a very neatly formed discography of ambient electronic, which thrives on the surprisingly flexible core voice of classical piano.

With a style more dynamic than downtempo ambient piano work, Grandbrothers have consistently produced tracks of engaging depth, actively pushing on new ideas to cover fresh ground with their releases. There’s much to be found in their previous work, but the LP made public in mid-January this year is a milestone in their journey, and one which reflects on what they’ve learnt and experimented with during that time.

Titled ‘All the Unknown’, the collection moves through a wide range of ambient sound, taking time to thread the extended narrative together. Our featured single is a remix of ‘Organism’, a track selected from the album and handed over to iconic post rock band Mogwai for remix, fresh from their recent success in the UK charts. Organism becomes distorted, driving and reinvigorated.

Plaid bring their own talent to John Tejada’s ‘Moving 909s’

Remixes present an opportunity for separate talents to cross paths, blending their sound and style to view already successful work from new perspectives. The compact three track EP recently dropped by composer and DJ John Tejada provides exactly that kind of chance, passing over his track ‘Moving 909s’ to the London based electronic duo Plaid.

Plaid is a project of Andy Turner and Ed Handley, who have been getting things done since the late 80’s. Founding members of ‘The Black Dog’, a group which helped to pioneer Techno in the UK, the pair has undeniably claimed their space in the electronic scene. Plaid was formed back in 1995 and has been their main focus since.

The release itself references back to Optical’s 1997 track ‘Moving 808s’, with the two tracks sharing an essentialist style and a core bass line. Tejada infused a minimalist atmosphere, respecting a gradual, premeditated progression which left room for both silence and contemplation. It’s a methodology which stays true to his favoured approach of sample manipulation in an environment with limited options.

Plaid has transformed the original and delivered an edit weighted down by a greater gravity, where melodic patterns run above darker beats of techno house.

Altering acclaimed work: Andhim remix Catching Flies’ ‘Opals’

Catching Flies is an artist whose work has drawn the attention of both crowds and critics, receiving praise from major industry players such as Annie Mac and Gilles Peterson. His music gives form to sensations of warmth and majesty, touching on an array of genres including jazz, soul and trip-hop. Catching Flies reputation advanced through live performance alongside acts including Little Dragon and Four Tet. Naturally, expectations were high for his first album ‘Silver Linings’ which finally debuted in early 2019.

Released to positive reception, ‘Silver Linings’ also attracted efforts from other artists to influence and reimagine each of the tracks contained on the LP. Now almost a year on, Catching Flies has collected and arranged exceptional new versions of his original work, announcing ‘Silver Linings Remixed’.

The 14 track EP includes contributions from various creators including DJ Seinfeld and Soundbwoy Killah, each of whom has managed to create something new while retaining the soul each track was first built around.

Our featured remix comes from German duo Andhim; hip-hop induced, sample incorporating, self-styled purveyors of ‘Super House’. The pair has transmuted the downtempo and subtly beautiful ‘Opals’ into a deep house track, resetting the soft mellow melodies into a warped reflection.
