House tracks made in silence, from HeartWerk’s ‘Distant’

The music produced by HeartWerk tends to be inhabited by night-time visions, possessed by the spirits of House, Acid and Techno. In the past HeartWerk has provided ADSR Collective with tracks weighed down by bass, shifting sequences which play around the edge of your hearing as much as they centre and direct the heavy, resolute beat. With inspirations from the world of Deep House such as Peggy Gou and Harrison BDP, the sound of HeartWerk naturally moves to dark, primal territories.

In these times of isolation producers are being influenced both physically and mentally, and as they experiment and tinker with beats the effect of this entrapment begins to show in their work. This is the environment in which HeartWerk has released the two track EP ‘Distant from You’, on Tulsa Oklahoma’s dance and electronic label ‘U Don’t Dance’.

Leading in with the 5:30 minute track ‘Distant’, we’re presented with faded clashes of industrial samples and muted bass, which are secondary to the higher toned beat line. Along with the melodic synth this beat is the element that pulls the atmosphere towards an astral level, shaded by melancholy. Lo-fi vocal samples complete a track positioned towards light, but restrained in dusk.

City vibes with Parking Lot's Los Angeles drones tape

The artist ‘Parking Lot’ inhabits a large territory, moving through genres such as Shoegaze, Dreampop, Lofi, House and Jungle. Constraints on which area he draws on for inspiration throughout the Los Angeles Drone Tape are relaxed, with five unique tracks twisting around a diverse collection of sounds. The artistic direction of the EP is motivated by experience with Los Angeles, the natural environment surrounding the city, the much more urban area within, and the dance music culture which exists in that space.

Each distinctive song explores a different atmosphere and a difference facet of the city, with subdued rave vibes and more expansive synths earning their own respective places. The heavy, systematic beats present in the tracks 909 and Los Angeles evoke a sense of tribute paid to more classic House, and with the filtering of the deep modulation through a Lofi filter, the result feels like a hazy recollection of the 90’s club scene.

Though there’s diversity within the sound, each track is permeated by Parking Lot’s dreamlike ambience, an underlying characteristic unsurprising considering the Dreampop, Shoegaze and Lofi connection. The release that we’re left with is an aesthetic attempt to capture the spirit of a city.

Juno Mamba's signature sound in "Flicker"

https://smarturl.it/junomambaflicker

Flicker is a welcoming introduction to the work of Juno Mamba – an Aussie producer who is set to release his debut EP in 2020. His influences of Bonobo and Four Tet are apparent but not obvious, and his fresh take on blending that signature sound with his own unique idea of dance music results in original and infectious club ready grooves.

The track, which features bright atmospheric sounds and a synthetic brass lead, snowballs into a build-up and is then followed by a much more organic and minimalistic motif. The progression of the arrangement seems simplistic, but layers and textures are added and subtracted to add that extra flavour, while keeping the listener hooked. Changes between the synthetic sounds and organic textures create a sense of tension while still maintaining a masterful balance.

A slow but engaging progression and a non-linear arrangement play up the overall uniqueness of the piece and help to frame some unforgettable musical moments. Undoubtably there will be many more of those once his debut EP ‘Light Echoes’ drops in 2020 on Soothsayer Records.

Pete Large aka Peteza, hails from Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne is known for having a thriving nightlife and long standing relationship with electronic music, especially House. But given the releases from Peteza or the material under his Pete Large moniker, you would be forgiven for mistaking this young Aussie native for one of an older generation Chicago producer. The reason for this is simple. He has layers and layers of that classic deep house sound in his productions. There are many nods to elements that made and make the classic Chicago sound so distinctive. Elements of jazz, acid and of course floating basslines and lush chord structures.

This is a genre that is hard to stand out in because so many producers emulate this style. It’s timeless and it still sounds as fresh and as relevant today as it ever did. While the genre might dip in and out of favour with top global spinners, producers and listeners are always drawn back to it, not only because of it’s roots, but also just how human the classic style is.

In “Not That Normal” Peteza does manage to take all the elements of Classic Deep House and put his own updated take on the Deep/Lounge House sound. While you would expect a routine 4/4 drum pattern to accompany the familiar deep chords, we are treated to a more break oriented drum sequence and elements of acid cut through the lush pads to give us an impression of Peteza’s playful personality. The elements always compliment each other rather than over power, which is always a sign that the producer knows the fundamental approach to a great deep track is harmony. Peteza does this while doing something that is just as skillful, making great soulful music that really stands out.
