House tracks made in silence, from HeartWerk’s ‘Distant’

The music produced by HeartWerk tends to be inhabited by night-time visions, possessed by the spirits of House, Acid and Techno. In the past HeartWerk has provided ADSR Collective with tracks weighed down by bass, shifting sequences which play around the edge of your hearing as much as they centre and direct the heavy, resolute beat. With inspirations from the world of Deep House such as Peggy Gou and Harrison BDP, the sound of HeartWerk naturally moves to dark, primal territories.

In these times of isolation producers are being influenced both physically and mentally, and as they experiment and tinker with beats the effect of this entrapment begins to show in their work. This is the environment in which HeartWerk has released the two track EP ‘Distant from You’, on Tulsa Oklahoma’s dance and electronic label ‘U Don’t Dance’.

Leading in with the 5:30 minute track ‘Distant’, we’re presented with faded clashes of industrial samples and muted bass, which are secondary to the higher toned beat line. Along with the melodic synth this beat is the element that pulls the atmosphere towards an astral level, shaded by melancholy. Lo-fi vocal samples complete a track positioned towards light, but restrained in dusk.

Brooding Breaks, from HeartWerk's 'Organic'

Looking to others who have worked with electro, breaks and house music, including Peggy Gou, DJ Boring and Ross from Friends, Oklahoma based artist HeartWerk creates brooding tracks with darkened atmospheres.  HeartWerk has established himself as an active part of the Oklahoma electronic music scene, particularly in his local area of Tulsa where he’s worked to create House and Techno tracks with the electronic music collective ‘U Don’t Dance’.

Back in mid-October HeartWerk released Fresh, a shadowy two track EP produced through the record label Audiophile Deep, who deal with revitalized old school styles, including Electro, Acid House, and Deep Tech. The Fresh EP makes a pretty good match for Audiophile Deep’s mode of operation, drafting elements of House into tracks which reconstitute the sound into something more contemporary.

Dropping into the leading track ‘Organic’, we’re led by a heavy bass beat, edged with some gloomy synth. The song benefits from getting played through headphones rather than speakers, digital clicks and physical twists creating some uncomfortable asmr, furthered by samples of what sounds like deep breathing. There’s a little acid style squelching to carry along the tempo, leaving ‘Organic’ as a moody House track delivered with a gritty feel to it.
