Taut creates melodic IDM landscapes, with ‘Vertices’

The producer heads toward his first full length album and drops a multilayered single along the way

For over a decade now Jacob Bergson has been at work within New York City, bringing his sound and personality to the music scene there. He’s found common ground with other artists based in the city, such as Rubblebucket and Jojo Mayer of Nerve, but also spent time away from the USA to perform abroad.

Bergson’s current project ‘Taut’ is a more recent creative venture, and marks the first time the producer has presented himself as solo artist. The steadily expanding discography under Taut’s name exudes vibes of IDM and glitch, as well as hints of influence from Floating Points and Siriusmo.

A full length album is on the way, but for now Taut’s identity is wrapped up in a handful of singles created this year. In these tracks downtempo beats set the foundation for extensive experimentation with synthesizer, with electronica melodies ebbing in and out of the landscape.

The most recent single from Taut which should pave the way to the expected LP is ‘Vertices’. The track is a dip into sonic waves and waters stirred by rising synthesizer and deep beats below the surface. At times Vertices falls back to minimalist melody, then resurfaces, alive and resonant.

CRYSTAL embraces old school sound, with ‘Ecco Funk’

taken from the forthcoming EP 'Ecco Funk' Download/Stream http://smarturl.it/CRYSTAL-EccoFunk/Pre-Order https://flau.bandcamp.com/album/ecco-funkartwork by R...

Fans of 80’s new wave, CRYSTAL prepare to deliver a new EP fresh from the past

With retro melodies and a touch of sparkling chiptune, ‘CRYSTAL’ are laying claim to their own unique place in the Tokyo synthwave scene. It’s clear to see that Ryota Miyake and Sunao Maruyama are influenced by decades past and keen to resurrect retro sound to bring life and energy to their modern music.

Their discography shines with the vibrant electro pop funk of the late 70s and early 80s, unapologetically groovy synth and energetic electronic percussion keeping the mood neon bright. A love of retro gaming also finds its way into CRYSTAL’s sound, samples sneaking into their tracks from classic franchises and generating a layer of nostalgic comfort.

Their firmly retro sound is niche but the bubblegum energy captured by CRYSTAL is infectious. The pair has received praise for their work from names like French label Sound Pellegrino, and has collaborated with artists including Ikonika and Matias Aguayo.

The duo just released their new EP, titled ‘Ecco Funk’ on the alternative Japanese label Flau. Referencing the cult classic game Ecco the Dolphin, the lead track plays around with dolphin chatters and smooths out the mood with cosmic sighs.

Retiring past projects, ‘Crosswhen’ moves ahead with ‘Peradam’

Crosswhen in an independent electronic music project based in London, UK. Our music is recorded and mixed in spatial audio and decoded in a format called bin...

With the Fall of Minerva behind them, Crosswhen start strong with EP // 2020

With the decline of underground group Fall of Minerva, the opportunity for new growth and new directions arose. Speculation as to future projects was answered with the formation of ‘Crosswhen’, a collaboration between former members Paolo Canaglia and Lollo Veronese.

The pair carry with them the inventive, genre mixing attitude which had been central to their previous group, but as their new album ‘EP // 2020’ makes clear, the energy and drive to create that the duo share is pushing them into new territories.

Both artists have experience composing synthesiser tracks and dealing with the engineering aspects of audio production. Despite different backgrounds, the two begin Crosswhen with a fully formed creative partnership which allows them to accelerate past the tentative early stages of a new group.

With their new five track EP, Canaglia and Veronese introduce us to their world of electronica. Something of their post genre blending remains, electroacoustic drums and guitar maintain a raw energy that claims space alongside ambient synth and defined technological melody. Taking on the challenge of working with spatial audio and producing in a binaural format, Crosswhen grasp command of every region of the auditory space.

Our featured track Peradam is subtle, but expansive in the elements it plays with and the environment it brings into being.

Exploring 'CNX', the new track from FLOCKS

Making their debut with a self-titled album back in 2018, 3-piece group FLOCKS work with (among other instruments) drums, guitar, keys and synths to lay foundations within their music before firing out in more experimental directions electronically. The band formed in Cincinnati, Ohio has been a bit quiet on the release-front this year, so it’s great to see that there’s been no drop in quality or ambition with their most recent outing.

There seems to be no limitation on what could appear in each track. Vocal samples occasionally play a part in their music, but I wouldn’t expect any hesitation from FLOCKS to make use of whatever sound complements the aesthetic of each song.

The fresh new track, CNX, is rich with flavour. The early sections of the track are playful, leading with electronic melodies which are just charmingly upbeat. The mood becomes more chilled out as the song continues; making some great use of organic cymbal percussion as the cosmic atmosphere builds, eventually giving way to bursts of higher energy and tension. Many artists attempt to create a journey in their music, as FLOCKS have attempted to here, taking experience from travel in Thailand. Certainly, CNX has the ability to take you on that journey.

Do something Reckless this summer with Miami Horror

Summer is an exciting time of year. The intensity of life comes full force, encouraging us to feel first and think later. It’s intoxicating, irresistible, and energizing, so it’s no wonder that some of our strongest feelings of nostalgia are linked to this season. And just in time to feel the heat, Australian synth-pop group and summer festival staples Miami Horror have dropped a brand new single that is perfectly poised to capture everything that summer represents, entitled “Restless”

Funk guitars, warm synths, and syncopated drums open the track in familiar Miami Horror style, recalling their early days during the heyday of french electro and blog house, but soon we’re treated to guest vocalist Kevin Lavitt’s soft voice that instantly places the song within the realm of more contemporary artists working with 70s and 80s aesthetics. It’s a real testament to founding member Benjamin Plant’s ability to remain relevant to current trends without jettisoning the core of Miami Horror’s oeuvre. Lyrically, Lavitt ruminates on a feeling that we have all felt before: do they like me? Like, really like me? Of course it’s a bit cheesy, but say anything in the right voice and it goes from cheesy to romantic. And if indulging in your emotions isn’t a quintessential aspect of summer, then I don’t know what is.

Check out the full-on 70s inspired video for “Restless” above, and get yourself ready for some of that summer love.

Sophomore's 'Ghost Rider' will have you on the edge of your seat

While most online content creators struggle to find copyright-friendly music to add to videos, Sophomore, almost in defiance of DRM algorithms, takes the opposite approach: he searches far and wide for obscure video, from Canada’s National Film Board archives to police dashcam footage, to augment his analogue synth dreamscapes.

In ‘Ghost Rider’, we ride shotgun for a high-speed car chase in gloriously vintage fashion that can’t help but call to mind the sounds of College and Cliff Martinez in Nicolas Winding Refn’s film Drive, or The Reds in Michael Mann’s Manhunter. Sophomore’s relaxed drum machine rhythms, blissed out arpeggios, and booming, cinematic pads would fit right at home with Italians Do It Better’s faux film score releases, but he does one better by setting the narrative scene himself with a car chase that looks like it could have happened right on the highway nearest to your own home. Despite leveraging an aesthetic sound palette that is no doubt familiar by now to us all, the cumulative effect is as entrancing as it is unique.

If you liked Ghost Rider, check out Sophomore’s other original compositions set to video on his YouTube channel or follow him on Soundcloud.

Interstellar Art pop from LA's Death Hags

Earthbound is about the feeling of coming back to life. It's that moment when you overcome grief to see the world with new eyes -- grief over what the earth is going through, the inevitability and the scale of it, but also personal trauma.

French born, LA based composer / vocalist Lola Jean aka ‘Death Hags’ delivers a synth driven space journey with her latest single ‘Earthbound’. The music video is an homage to the sci-fi cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, but unlike the character played by David Bowie in the film, the cosmonaut in the video rediscovers a connection to the earth and himself.

Jean describes the track:
"Earthbound is the feeling of coming back to life. It's that moment when you overcome grief to see the world with new eyes -- grief over what the earth is going through, the inevitability and the scale of it, but also personal trauma, because they are linked… We can still heal regardless of the damage and we are still beautiful, sometimes more beautiful with the damage. The only constant is change."

The track dazzles not only in it’s conceptual depth but also vocal delivery and production. Jean’s effortless vocals seem weightless amongst a backdrop of rich synths and tape-tinged percussion. The whole track glides with a smooth mixdown and tasteful amount of reverb and effects. If you are a fan of catchy riffs, infectious vocals and spacey synth lines then Death Hags is definitely one to put in your orbit.

New ambient album from Manchester producer- Twin Complex

Oliver Hardingham aka Twin Complex is an electronic producer, composer and filmmaker based in Manchester, UK. Although writing and performing in mostly hardcore bands throughout his teens, Oliver always kept small electronic side projects on the go. But it wasn't until early 2017, when his electronic productions started to become more the focus of his creative output, that he began to develop his own unique style and sound.

As Hardingam shaped and sculpted his early ideas, over time more and more refined forms and structures emerged. Ideas turned to concepts, and concepts to arranged tracks, until gradually he was compiling a number of completed pieces.

Released just over a week ago, Twin Complex 'Permanence' represents not only the coalescence of these various creative narratives into a debut album, but also a turning of the page in the young producers aesthetic progression. The album is 6 tracks of brooding ambient soundscapes, entrancing arpeggiation, and just the right about of percussive framework.

'Remnants' is a swelling ambient piece from the album, exhibiting a tasteful mix of minimalism and tonal hypnotism. Cascading synths enter quietly only to bloom into full blown firework-like analog expressions.
