Monophobe and Sixtus Preiss mix atypical attitudes to create ‘Jaune’

Backed by Affine Records, two experimental producers collaborate on a vibrant track

Affine Records is a Vienna based label which brings to the table sounds of nu-jazz, hip hop and dancefloor vibes. Fluid and flexible with the artists they support, creative energy is the key connection linking the artist collective, which includes names like Dorian Concept and Wandl.

It’s through Affine Records that upcoming track ‘Jaune’ is being produced, a collaborative effort from Monophobe and Sixtus Preiss. Both artists are located in Vienna, but share deeper connections in regard to their creative process, each embracing a deeply experimental vibe and taking unexpected directions which at times can echo the freedom of alternative jazz.

Monophobe avoids settling into a particular genre or point of predictability, not just in a general sense but also within the details of each individual track. His most recent collection, the ‘Screw Drivers EP’ plays with downtempo, found sound, rich pads and intense synth.

In Sixtus Preiss it seems Monophobe finds a kindred soul. Sixtus Preiss has developed similar skills as a multi-instrumentalist, and his hip hop tracks create a left field, nu jazz percussive arena to illuminate vocalists.

In ‘Jaune’ the two adamantly expressive producers have created an IDM sound which combines dancefloor beat with more flavours than you might think possible.

Minor Science reshapes sounds from the Magic Drum Orchestra

Ralph Cree and Glyn Bush (aka BiggaBush) are the names behind largescale samba and percussion group, Magic Drum Orchestra. A project built on a wealth of experience, talent and creativity, the MDO has been spreading its influence and making waves since 2005.

The group has taken on the challenge of giving unique twists to iconic tracks from Snoop Dog and Benga, they’ve embraced funk rich genres including Afrobeat and Samba, thrashed out experiments with dubstep and modern dance beats, and then fused the energy together for an intense sound that leaves a lasting impression.

With the newest release, focus is turned towards those in the music community drawn to the MDO’s cocktail of electronic beats. May 8th saw the reveal of ‘100 Whites A Day’, a seven track collection of MDO remixes from artists like DJ Madd and Blood Wine or Honey, as well as by BiggaBush himself.

Minor Science is among those artists let loose on the tracks, delivering his take on ‘Two Bs One White’ and adding flavours of heavy dub and electronica wrapped in a clean and crisp mixdown. The UK born, Berlin based artist switched from music journalism to production in 2018, and has since debuted with London based label- Whities. His characteristic left-field vibes bring new life and a new perspective to a classic track.

Clean glitch over rough beats with Mindsight: W_

Provided to YouTube by DistroKid W___ · Mindsight W___ ℗ Mindsight Released on: 2019-10-25 Auto-generated by YouTube.

It was only last month that we uploaded an article on Mindsight’s neatly produced track ‘Source’, but the up-and-coming German artist is already back with something new for us to check out. His last track carried with it electrifying melodies with some grittier undertones, showcasing some raw talent and an eye on the future.

What strikes me listening to this new track, titled ‘W_’ is how confident Mindsight is in the contrasting territories of both vibrant and uplifted beats, as well as the darker beats which form an undercurrent to more aggressive electronic music.

As the song opens, the sound we’re presented with almost leans towards a soundscape of rough, shifting technology. This sets us on a path with more gravel than that of the previous release, a theme supported throughout the song with harder hitting percussion and a pleasingly gruff beat situated in the deeper levels which has a real animalistic edge to it.

Moving over the top of this are glitch inspired trills and lilts, and although they’re not given space until around a fifth of the way into the song the samples bring in a level of dynamism that provides ‘W_’ with its futuristic edge.

NOMVDSLVND finds his place with 'Belong'

NOMVDSLVND (pronounced ‘nomads land’) may live in Toronto, but as many of us in large cities can attest to, having a home and knowing your place are two very different things. Despite a background in dance, NOMVDSLVND crafts music that, instead of compelling an energetic dancefloor, interrogates the uncertainty that comes with trying to find one’s community. Perhaps his transition from dance to music was the creative spark for this idea. Many of the tracks on Part 1 of the 2-part release ‘More Harm Than Good’ slip in and out of musical ideas at ease, like a wallflower timidly testing the waters of a gathering. NOMVDSLVND creates lush backdrops for these ideas, mixing field recordings, found sounds, and broken beats that make each track an entirely new space.

On ‘Belong’, which you can hear above, he uses Rhodes-like chords to invoke a melancholy mood, a sense of feeling unsettled, of knowing what you want but not knowing how to get there. Broken beats skitter underneath, dropping in and out of the track, underpinning that anxious feeling. Punctuating this idea, he uses heavily processed vocal snippets throughout that further capture the distance we can sometimes feel between where we are and where we want to be. It’s an intoxicating concoction.

‘More Harm Than Good Part 1: Here For Now’ is out March 8th on Toronto label- ‘Bedroomer’ and can be preordered now. If you liked ‘Belong’, check out lots more over on Bedroomer’s Soundcloud.

A Powerful Presence Felt by Cuts in 'Time Is Not Your Friend'

Provided to YouTube by Redeye Distribution Time Is Not Your Friend · CUTS Time Is Not Your Friend ℗ 2018 Village Green Released on: 2018-11-06 Composer: Anthony Tombling Jr Music Publisher: Village Green Auto-generated by YouTube.

Anthony Tombling Jr a.k.a. Cuts delivers another harrowing track from his album ‘A Gradual Decline’ which dropped last month on Village Green Records. Cuts is an audio-visual project commenting on the environmental concerns facing us today. We explored the importance of music like this in our most recent review of the title track from the album. As to say for ‘Time Is Not Your Friend’ is very much in the same vein as ‘A Gradual Decline’, although slightly lighter in tone it still plays with the same kind of earnest and urgency.

Tombling unapologetically lays down a perpetuating melody of distorted organs and synths that build in intensity until around the three minute mark. Then the drums kick in, giving us again some sharp percussion and textures to drive home the sense of a jagged landscape that Tombling has curated throughout the musical and visual elements in ‘A Gradual Decline’. Again Anthony drives home a message of prescience and purpose while lifting us up in the most epic fashion. If you are a fan of cinematic music with a real message at it’s core then Cuts is very much worth putting on your radar.

Idm-tinged ambient-techno from German duo 'qrauer'

Aracus EP (NR 05) Released 13 july 2018 on Nonostar Records http://www.smarturl.it/qrauer_aracus

Creating a variety of left leaning electronica, from micro house to ambient techno, Christian Grochau and Ludwig Bauer aka qrauer are a breath of fresh air in the often formulaic world of modern dance music. With a 4/4 framework driving their tracks, the duo’s productions are heavy on lush sound design and sonic experimentation while remaining reined in enough to sit comfortably within an eclectic DJ set.

With both Christian and Ludwig coming from strong musical backgrounds, Christian being a virtuosic percussionist and Ludwig being a skilled pianist, composer and multi-instrumentalist, the two are able to find the perfect balance between danceable musicality and genre pushing electronic aesthetics.

Their debut EP ‘Aracus’ fully harnesses the duo’s creative powers and concentrates them into 4 tracks of organic sidewinder rhythms and awe-inspiring moments of cinematic brilliance. Brokebone is the concluding track of the album, with an off-kilter chorus of impressively honed percussive elements and richly coloured brutish leads, the track wraps up the EP nicely while leaving us hungry for the next sonic ‘tour de force’ from the ingenious German duo.
