Electronica melts into nu jazz, in Beifer’s ‘Blurred Thoughts’

The 2020 project adds another smooth and experimental track to a patiently cultivated discography

From the electronic community of Munich comes Beifer. Independent both in production style and sound, his discography moves through shades of ambient, incorporating classical piano and melody with an organic weight to it. At other points in his music, heavily synthetic tones are the element that lights up Beifer’s work, starting to reach out to more artificial genres like chiptune. The overall image leans towards the catchall term of experimental, but what’s clear is that the German artist is unafraid to bridge the gap between the physical and purely electronic.

The track we shift our attention to here is ‘Blurred Thoughts’, an appropriate introduction to the upcoming producer’s artistic process. The muted beats employed in the sound carry through the narrative of the release, imbibed with a trace of rhythmic garage pattern. Percussive clicks find their way into the mix as well, furthering that unobtrusive groove and comfortable nu jazz feel. The ambience here is dusted in synth however, elevating ‘Blurred Thoughts’ into a more idm style environment, blurring together the separate elements as the title suggests.

With Beifer’s discography limited to a few tracks and with significant variety between them, what will follow this meditative release remains to be seen.

Bacayne steps up with a fresh EP: ‘Yesternow’

Taking inspiration from the wider electronica scene, Bacayne aims higher with new music

The sound of Bacayne has been born from a variety of sources, both musical and geographical. Native to the Dominican Republic, Bacayne represents a fusion of cultures and styles, affected by both North and South America and richer for it. The multi-instrumentalist now makes his home in Madrid, and from that location explores what electronica has to offer.

Bacayne fits with the labels of beat maker, producer and performer, but attempts to pin down his style into a few key terms presents problems once you consider the range of styles which the artist draws upon in his work. Shades of hip hop blend together with downtempo and future bass. At times Bacayne creates dancefloor powered instrumentals which move the body and soul, then on other occasions reduces the tempo to produce techno edged tracks with mesmerising gravity.

Now with designs to follow on from 2017’s ‘Alnight’ EP, Bacayne is on the point of releasing a fresh new EP, titled ‘Yesternow’. A project supported by Dominican Label Stereoptico, the collection sheds light on the artist’s progress since his previous EP, refined in its delivery and polished in its application of acid flavour. Our eponymous featured track strikes a sonic note, energised with slap bass and infused with modern synthwave.

Clean glitch over rough beats with Mindsight: W_

Provided to YouTube by DistroKid W___ · Mindsight W___ ℗ Mindsight Released on: 2019-10-25 Auto-generated by YouTube.

It was only last month that we uploaded an article on Mindsight’s neatly produced track ‘Source’, but the up-and-coming German artist is already back with something new for us to check out. His last track carried with it electrifying melodies with some grittier undertones, showcasing some raw talent and an eye on the future.

What strikes me listening to this new track, titled ‘W_’ is how confident Mindsight is in the contrasting territories of both vibrant and uplifted beats, as well as the darker beats which form an undercurrent to more aggressive electronic music.

As the song opens, the sound we’re presented with almost leans towards a soundscape of rough, shifting technology. This sets us on a path with more gravel than that of the previous release, a theme supported throughout the song with harder hitting percussion and a pleasingly gruff beat situated in the deeper levels which has a real animalistic edge to it.

Moving over the top of this are glitch inspired trills and lilts, and although they’re not given space until around a fifth of the way into the song the samples bring in a level of dynamism that provides ‘W_’ with its futuristic edge.

Genre blending future sounds from French producer- Sc Ar

As Kurt Cobain said “punk is musical freedom. It’s saying, doing and playing whatever you want”. From punk to hip-hop, youth culture worldwide has continually strived to differentiate itself from the previous generation. Whether seeking identity or new forms of expression, this cyclical pursuit can be seen time and time again throughout recent history.

And modern day electronic music is no different, listening to some of the new sounds coming out from the next generation of producers it’s clear that unique ideas, genres and styles are constantly bubbling just below the surface. Whether it be the blending of genres, new and interesting production techniques, or disregard for any sort of structure or musical conventions of the past, there’s no denying that some of the new sounds coming out almost daily now are some of the most dynamic and sonically diverse we’ve yet to hear.

Take upcoming French producer- Sc Ar for example. His new single ‘Flirt’ teases with touches of house, vapourwave, idm, and electronica in a sound that can only be described as forward-thinking and future. Pitched vocal samples ascend white marble staircases of billowing, nostalgic pads while organic, woody percussion rains down from the rafters. As the young producer states “Flirt is my very first single. Others will come.”
