Sonic Cinema 02- Music videos from Charbonneau / Amato, Kamandi, and rosi

Following up their 2018 debut album on Toronto’s Paper Bag records, Montreal musical duo Charbonneau / Amato bring forth their newest collection of voltage controlled tracks with ‘Synth Works Vol.’2 slated for a release in February 2022 on east coast label ‘Backward Music’. With each respectively participating in a multitude of musical groups and projects Charbonneau / Amato often work remotely; firing ideas back and forth to shape their unique soundscapes. Although we’ll have to wait a few months yet for the full release, we’ve luckily been gifted the first single ‘Light Memoir’ with a cleverly crafted stop motion visual from Joël Vaudreuil to hold us over til then.

New Zealand electronic and experimental producer Kamandi just dropped a new single ahead of his upcoming Sinking But Upwards Cassette E.P. Exploring the deeper end of breakbeat and bass music, Kamandi stays true to form with cracking drums and visceral vibes emanating from the new single. It’s a true representation of where the artist is at currently, as the new vapor noir video was filmed, edited, directed and animated by Kamandi.

rosi is the musical project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Petrosino and singer/songwriter Joni Mathews. Both accomplished musicians in their own right, the collaborative project was born several years ago when the two crossed paths in music school. Their upcoming album 'White light’ features six tracks written in Los Angeles and completed in London during quarantine, representing a sound torn between brooding doom and delicate hope. Collaborating only with Sam Petts-Davies (Frank Ocean, Thom Yorke) and Mandy Parnell (Bjork, Aphex Twin) for mixing and mastering, the duo’s creative vision comes to life with ghostly synths and intimate vocals wrapped in a gritty well-crafted exterior.

Neon vibes and keen energy from AURAGRAPH’s ‘Acid Disco’

Second single from upcoming album "Opacity Field" by AURAGRAPH! Release date: January 15th 2021.

The darkwave producer draws from vaporwave and techno to create an LP with polished melody and a touch of tension

The producer behind experimental synthesizer project AURAGRAPH is Hector Carlos Ramirez II, who originally became involved in the music scene through the hardcore and punk community active in Texas. Coming into contact with electronic music ignited a fascination for synthesizers and samplers, and set Ramirez to work on experimenting with electronica under a range of different aliases.

Ramirez set up AURAGRAPH a few years ago following a move to LA, venturing into themes of dark and vaporwave. The result has been pleasingly smooth, as the nostalgia brought in by vaporwave softens the colder electronica. AURAGRAPH’s talent for the muted ambience of darkwave is evident, but shimmering melodies and striking drum beats give energy to a neon atmosphere, and a unique injection of excitement.

Following on from composing and mixing for Netflix’s Stranger Things and collaboration with artists like S U R V I V E and Missions, AURAGRAPH is looking ahead to a fresh LP in early 2021. Containing nine new tracks and two remixes; ‘OPACITY FIELD’ will be released via vaporwave specialists Hiraeth Records and Midwest Collective. Of the two tracks released so far ‘Acid Disco’ is the more downtempo, mixing light melodies and gothic delivery.

Bacayne steps up with a fresh EP: ‘Yesternow’

Taking inspiration from the wider electronica scene, Bacayne aims higher with new music

The sound of Bacayne has been born from a variety of sources, both musical and geographical. Native to the Dominican Republic, Bacayne represents a fusion of cultures and styles, affected by both North and South America and richer for it. The multi-instrumentalist now makes his home in Madrid, and from that location explores what electronica has to offer.

Bacayne fits with the labels of beat maker, producer and performer, but attempts to pin down his style into a few key terms presents problems once you consider the range of styles which the artist draws upon in his work. Shades of hip hop blend together with downtempo and future bass. At times Bacayne creates dancefloor powered instrumentals which move the body and soul, then on other occasions reduces the tempo to produce techno edged tracks with mesmerising gravity.

Now with designs to follow on from 2017’s ‘Alnight’ EP, Bacayne is on the point of releasing a fresh new EP, titled ‘Yesternow’. A project supported by Dominican Label Stereoptico, the collection sheds light on the artist’s progress since his previous EP, refined in its delivery and polished in its application of acid flavour. Our eponymous featured track strikes a sonic note, energised with slap bass and infused with modern synthwave.

Commercial subversion, from Chayse Porter with ‘Carol’s Boutique’

Chayse Porter (Human Beat, Seriously) takes you on a journey of lost and long-forgotten splendor, where the sound of soft keyboard flute rings out from an ov...

Chayse Porter is an active component of the music scene of Alabama, taking the role of bassist in the punk group ‘Human Beat’, as well as getting involved with the more laid back tones of the band ‘Seriously’. His most recent release takes a departure from these genres, although there’s a tangible counter-culture irony in the muzac style of ‘Carol’s Boutique’.

The track came through the Earth Libraries label, supporters of modern punk, psych and experimental and with whom Porter has worked previously. Made public on May 2nd, the track fits neatly in the easy listening zone and took inspiration from shopping mall local to Porter.

As intended, it’s an enjoyable, evanescent track which seems somewhat passive at face value. The twist that gives this one flavour is the detail at the edges of the track, beyond the melody put together with thrift store keyboards. Faint synth starts to fade in an air of vaporwave to match the commercial overtone captured by Porter, and the samples at the edge of hearing which fit an altogether different aesthetic comprised partly of the slow build up to a subtly jarring outro, leaving the consumerist atmosphere unsure of itself.

Synthwave with a heart of Sci-fi: Wavescapes’ ‘Stardust’

Len van de Laak and Tim Barning of Wavescapes were brought together through their study at Conservatorium van Amsterdam, a division of Amsterdam’s University of Art. Their first track together, ‘Circe’, was produced as a cinematic soundtrack. Although the short movie it was intended to score never came to fruition, this collaboration marked the beginning of a partnership dedicated to development of electronic music without limitations.

Previously Wavescapes have worked together with artists including Bertolf and Dotan, and their music is being featured in HUGO BOSS promotional material for the Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Show in Milan.

Cinematic textures thread throughout their tracks, with sweeping atmospheric vibes that bring colour to new ideas, new places, and new perspectives. Influence of Sci-fi on their production process is evident, as the pair guides the environment of each release in the direction of genres like Vaporwave and Synthwave. Their aesthetic is often more at home in the darker, more muted areas of synth, though the occasional introduction of classical piano lends a hauntingly emotional edge.

As the decade ends, Wavescapes introduces us to their 11 track eponymous debut album through ‘Stardust’, a futuristic track supported by purposeful electronic beats and glittering waves of synth.
