More strange moods from Cassilda and Carcosa

Known for a love of weird fiction and acidic techno, this artist continues to bring fresh ideas to the table

We last checked in with Brooklyn based producer “Cassilda and Carcosa” back in October last year when they dropped an LP with the Virginia based Ingrown Records. The sound and style output by the project is vibrant with unique flavour, embracing acid flicks and faithfully electronic melodies. The moniker adopted also speaks to the artist’s taste for the unusual, itself a reference to the work of famous science fiction author.

That ambience of science fiction sits as one of the core themes at work within Cassilda and Carcosa’s discography, that and a determination to avoid typical digital audio workstations in favour of their own varied range of analogue mixers, sequencers and synthesisers.

That predilection for more old school quality resurfaces in our featured track from the New York artist, titled “The King in Yellow”.  An experimental IDM track which fits a hazy bassline under scattered sonic beats, The King in Yellow is taken from “TX-81Z”, a four track EP and Cassilda and Carcosa’s most recent collection.

The EP returns to that new age glitch and acid fed techno which become a tribute to the world of weird fiction. It’s bouncy, technically proficient, and slides in a hint of groove.

New progressive sound from Delayed Pleasure, with ‘orbiting the sun’

Stepping onto the scene, the artist presents two tracks with an acidic taste

Constructing ambience and environment within a track is a challenge artists often find themselves devoting hours of work to. Slow burn tracks like those featured in Delayed Pleasure’s debut EP ‘Galactic Center’ are the result of long term and patient selection of themes and samples, creating an end result which becomes difficult to summarise, as any multi-layered experience is.

Based in the UK, Delayed Pleasure has been experimenting with hardware synths and drum machines. He lists artists such as Plastikman, TinMan and DeepChord as being influences on his sound, which moves gradually and embraces slow but purposeful evolution.

In Delayed Pleasure’s style can be found echoes of dub, acid and techno, each diffused across the track runtime. It’s the kind of music which drifts between moods, interacting with different themes and then travelling along a progressive techno beat to find the next avenue of sound.

The leading track on the EP, ‘star ferry’, exudes a lower tone, flicks of acid appearing and disappearing like sparks against the inky blackness of the bass synth. Our featured track ‘orbiting the sun’ rolls at a slightly higher tempo and begins to surround the listener with rhythmic techno, before exposing a more alien side to the sound.

Bacayne steps up with a fresh EP: ‘Yesternow’

Taking inspiration from the wider electronica scene, Bacayne aims higher with new music

The sound of Bacayne has been born from a variety of sources, both musical and geographical. Native to the Dominican Republic, Bacayne represents a fusion of cultures and styles, affected by both North and South America and richer for it. The multi-instrumentalist now makes his home in Madrid, and from that location explores what electronica has to offer.

Bacayne fits with the labels of beat maker, producer and performer, but attempts to pin down his style into a few key terms presents problems once you consider the range of styles which the artist draws upon in his work. Shades of hip hop blend together with downtempo and future bass. At times Bacayne creates dancefloor powered instrumentals which move the body and soul, then on other occasions reduces the tempo to produce techno edged tracks with mesmerising gravity.

Now with designs to follow on from 2017’s ‘Alnight’ EP, Bacayne is on the point of releasing a fresh new EP, titled ‘Yesternow’. A project supported by Dominican Label Stereoptico, the collection sheds light on the artist’s progress since his previous EP, refined in its delivery and polished in its application of acid flavour. Our eponymous featured track strikes a sonic note, energised with slap bass and infused with modern synthwave.

Dreams of the unknowable, ‘Cassilda and Carcosa’ present ‘Cloudwaves’

With handmade tracks, the New York artist imbibes minimalism and ambience with strange fiction

The producer behind the experimental IDM project ‘Cassilda and Carcosa’ resides in Brooklyn. They take their namesake from the writings of Robert W. Chambers, a prolific author concerned with the supernatural. The science fiction of Chambers ripples through the work of Cassilda and Carcosa, igniting a desire to experiment, and bringing to life new worlds that flicker through malleable genres like ambient, new age, drone and minimalism.

Parallel to Cassilda and Carcosa is this artist’s career as a software engineer, an inevitably technological environment from which electronica can still provide an escape, if approached with the right perspective.

Circumventing a conventional digital audio workstation (DAW) entirely, Cassilda and Carcosa composed their 2020 album ‘Transformers, Transistors, and Tape’ using a host of analog mixers, hardware synthesizers, sequencers and guitar pedals, directly recorded to tape.

The eight track album released on Ingrown Records, the Virginia based imprint who welcome creators of new age psychedelia. The music contained within the album is tied to minimal but club worthy beats, which generate weird, evasive melodies. The sound is alien at times but consistently enjoyable listening, with acid squelches and electronic pulses falling in a pattern before you. The closing track ‘Cloudwaves’ leaves a more ambient taste however, with synth rolling over sonar blinks.

Shifting into acid glitch, with Stabfinger's 'Doppia Personalità'

As a musician, Nicolas Atlan seems unwilling to settle on one identity. Based in Paris, he works to produce a range of sounds which include collaborative projects, mashups, remixes and solo work. From this collection of music three major names have emerged. Atlan has been part of the talent behind ‘Binome’ a 90’s techno focused pairing with Venetian artist Funny Ox. He’s also taken a more experimental path with the IDM partnership titled ‘Lumiere’, in which he joined up with Enrico Wiltsch of Rome.

The music presented to us today arrives by way of his solo project, ‘Stabfinger’, a bass rooted project incorporating a healthy amount of breakbeat and low frequencies. Under the Stabfinger alias Atlan has been looking to artists including Apex Twin and Squarepusher, as he continues to construct his own unique brand of electronic music. He’s had time to do so, considering he first began to produce as Stabfinger back in 2008.

His new EP just released on February 13th in connection with London’s Boomerang Records, which means two more fresh tracks, the lead in being ‘Doppia Personalità’. This six and a half minute track weighs in heavier on Glitch and D&B, bringing a sharper grip and a twist of acidity.
