DEFSET emerges from lockdown with a 16-track masterpiece

As a newcomer to the scene, Proximity solidifies the artists’ mastery of electronic music

Proximity is the latest release by electronic musician DEFSET. An alias for artist Leo Neelands, DEFSET takes its inspiration from the electronic dance and acid house movements that defined the cultural moment of his youth. Originally known for his work as a visual effects artist, Neelands, has worked on the effects of movies including Harry Potter, Gravity, The Hobbit, and Iron Man 3. But, with a lifelong passion for music dating back to his time making music on an Atari ST, Neelands career as DEFSET has solidified his commitment to the art as he has made himself known for a creative use of modular synthesizers and onboard gear, creating immersive music with glitchy, syncopated rhythms.

As the debut album of an artist who is new to the scene, Proximity follows a series of single releases, many of which appear on the full album. In 2021, he released ‘Deadlines,’ Shira2,’ and ‘Bathtime,’ all of which are featured in the full album, as well as ‘The Edge of the World,’ ‘Shira2 (Locked Groove Remix),’ and ‘Deadlines (Perry Granville Remix).’

DEFSET used his memories of the UK rave scene as a point of inspiration for the album. Rediscovering fond memories in the process of producing the music, DEFSET points tracks such as ‘HoneySwede’ to dedicated fans of underground electronic music. Looking to return to the music making process, Neelands purchased modular gear before the COVID lockdown began and spent the duration of that period producing this album, with every sound and element created from scratch. In its entirety, the album presents an energetic feel with the opportunity for listeners to enter a trance-like-state, absorbed in the atmospheric tone that carries through each track.

Kamandi continues his rise up with ‘Scene Kid Destroya’

The self-propelled artist keeps his audience connected with new releases following his 2019 debut album

Like many other artists trying to find their space in the electronic music community, New Zealand based producer Kamandi began his journey by releasing tracks through online hubs like Soundcloud and Bandcamp. Generating a following online can seem attractive to upcoming producers but building a platform independently is no small task; Kamandi’s rise as an individual is a sign of both his talent and ambition.

On the path to becoming more closely involved with electronica, Kamadi experimented with bass guitar, moved in and out of bands, and picked up a degree in music which gave him an academic edge. After making the transition to producer in his late teens, Kamandi began to work with a mix of genres, experience which influenced his current eclectic style which includes sound from territories like hip-hop, IDM, breakbeat, and deep house.

While maintaining his personal approach Kamandi has collaborated with names like Three 6 Mafia, Swishahouse, Riff Raff and Waka Flocka Flame as well as helping to score compositions for Dior and Netflix.

Despite involvement with these major projects his debut album only surfaced in mid-2019, with listeners immediately awaiting more. One such new release is this week’s ‘Scene Kid Destroya’, a single carried by sharp IDM beats.

Shifting into acid glitch, with Stabfinger's 'Doppia Personalità'

As a musician, Nicolas Atlan seems unwilling to settle on one identity. Based in Paris, he works to produce a range of sounds which include collaborative projects, mashups, remixes and solo work. From this collection of music three major names have emerged. Atlan has been part of the talent behind ‘Binome’ a 90’s techno focused pairing with Venetian artist Funny Ox. He’s also taken a more experimental path with the IDM partnership titled ‘Lumiere’, in which he joined up with Enrico Wiltsch of Rome.

The music presented to us today arrives by way of his solo project, ‘Stabfinger’, a bass rooted project incorporating a healthy amount of breakbeat and low frequencies. Under the Stabfinger alias Atlan has been looking to artists including Apex Twin and Squarepusher, as he continues to construct his own unique brand of electronic music. He’s had time to do so, considering he first began to produce as Stabfinger back in 2008.

His new EP just released on February 13th in connection with London’s Boomerang Records, which means two more fresh tracks, the lead in being ‘Doppia Personalità’. This six and a half minute track weighs in heavier on Glitch and D&B, bringing a sharper grip and a twist of acidity.
