Wavescapes returns with smooth downtempo, in ‘Currents’

The duo add a touch of organic into the new EP’s carefully finished sonic soundscape

Len van de Laak and Tim Barning first pooled their talents as electronic producers when tasked with the composition of a short film score. Although the feature ultimately remained unreleased, over the course of creating the feature track ‘Circe’ the pair discovered a shared passion for expression through music. Interested in further developing their potential as collaborators the Amsterdam based artists formed Wavescapes, a project delving into themes of downtempo electronica.

Claiming a space for themselves in the Dutch music business, Wavescapes continued to experiment with their deliberate and reflective style. An orientation towards cinematic themes has remained a focal point for the duo, with Wavescapes music being used in a variety of TV programs as well as promotional material for Hugo Boss during the 2020 Milan fashion show.

The most recent expansion to the pair’s discography comes in the form of ‘Currents’, an EP consisting of six tracks, each gentle but uplifting. While decidedly electronica based, tracks like Khepri and Currents make use of emotive piano, alongside more sweeping synth waves which balance out the percussive hits as a traditional swing section would. Organic guitar also finds its way into the mix, but it’s the feather light downtempo flow that’s polishes the release.

Synthwave with a heart of Sci-fi: Wavescapes’ ‘Stardust’

Len van de Laak and Tim Barning of Wavescapes were brought together through their study at Conservatorium van Amsterdam, a division of Amsterdam’s University of Art. Their first track together, ‘Circe’, was produced as a cinematic soundtrack. Although the short movie it was intended to score never came to fruition, this collaboration marked the beginning of a partnership dedicated to development of electronic music without limitations.

Previously Wavescapes have worked together with artists including Bertolf and Dotan, and their music is being featured in HUGO BOSS promotional material for the Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Show in Milan.

Cinematic textures thread throughout their tracks, with sweeping atmospheric vibes that bring colour to new ideas, new places, and new perspectives. Influence of Sci-fi on their production process is evident, as the pair guides the environment of each release in the direction of genres like Vaporwave and Synthwave. Their aesthetic is often more at home in the darker, more muted areas of synth, though the occasional introduction of classical piano lends a hauntingly emotional edge.

As the decade ends, Wavescapes introduces us to their 11 track eponymous debut album through ‘Stardust’, a futuristic track supported by purposeful electronic beats and glittering waves of synth.
