Bastien Keb to release a fourth album following up on his experimental tracks from 2020

Organ Recital is the multi-instrumentalist’s latest psychedelic production

Organ Recital is the latest album by Bastien Keb, following up to the 2020 album The Killing of Eugene Peeps. The artist is known for his layering of jazz, soul, and funk with a psychedelic twist to create a uniquely dynamic sound. Based out of England, Bastien Keb is a producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, trumpet, and the flute. Keb is also the co-founder of the project ‘Grandamme’ in partnership with Claudia Kane through the London-based label Def Pressé.

Bastien Keb adsr collective review

Bastien Keb’s first album debuted in 2015, titled, Drinking in the Shadows of Zizou. His work later appeared with the First World label in 2017 after remixing tracks from artists including Submotion Orchestra, Paper Tiger, and more. In 2020, Keb returned to the music scene after a short break to release an experimental album, The Killing of Eugene Peeps, which was conceptualized as a soundtrack to an imagined film.

The latest album, Organ Recital, is set to release in July. From the album, the first released single is “Pasadena,” a track that speaks to the fading memories of intimate encounters. The album weaves a combination of psychedelic, funk, and cinematic elements. The result is a construction of a fantasy world, an escape from loneliness, and subtle integration of the sounds of everyday life. Fragments remind listeners of the world around them while offering a dreamlike journey away from the present.

Julian Zyklus Captures an Underwater Piano Experience in his Latest EP Release

Following his debut album from 2019, Waterpiano is a contemporary take on classical legends

Musician and sound designer Julian Zyklus has released his next solo EP, ‘Waterpiano,’ following his debut album ‘Four Dimensional Waves’ from 2019. Based in Italy, his music reimagines classical traditions, and his unique sound has been in the making since he began playing piano as a child. Merging classical and electronic components, Zyklus has a passion for digital synthesis and the potential to create cinematic sound.

Zyklus is a member of the Italian alternative band A Toys Orchestra and has composed three albums with the group. He has also worked with Italian singer Nada to arrange songs for piano, and he was featured in many of her high-profile performances. In 2019, he worked with the Seattle-based label Hush Hush Records to release his debut album, exploring conceptual sonic effects. The album was based on the idea of a universe born out of a white hole and displayed a wildly unique celestial soundscape full of innovative synthesizer applications.

His latest album, ‘Waterpiano,’ is named after the German word ‘Wasserklavier,’ which is the title of a seminal piece by pioneering Italian composer Luciano Berio. Inspired by the music of Chopin, Bach, Debussy, and Satie, he used their whimsical sound to develop his compositions for this album. Filtering his piano recordings through digital delays, he managed to create a sound as if the instruments were underwater, representing his interpretation of ‘Wasserklavier.’ Through four distinct yet fluidly dynamic tracks, the album shows Zyklus developing a uniquely experiential take on the music’s legacy and beauty.

AUA’s second album is set to drop in early 2022

The follow-up to their debut breakthrough promises to bring an electronic space of reflection

German duo Fabian Bremer and Henrik Eichmann under the name AUA have released two singles from their upcoming album. Set to drop in January 2022, ‘The Damaged Organ’ will be the pair’s second album in their experimental, krautrock journey. Based in Leipzig, AUA is a band determined to make their own pop music blueprint with experimental electronics. The weightless melancholy of their music develops an undertone of otherworldliness that promises to remain consistent from their first album to their second.

Making their debut in 2020 with the singles ‘I Don’t Want It Darker’ and ‘Coke Diet,’ both from their subsequent eponymous first album I Don’t Want It Darker, they set the tone for explosive beats and surf guitars underlying their musical style. In anticipation of their second album, they have released singles ‘Post Human Blossom’ and ‘Islands Song.’

The new album will explore the idea of alienation through internal and external reflection, merging introspection and social analysis. The story depicts a search for identity in a way, and that journey is reflected in the DIY production of the album, grounded in a search for inspiration using unusual electronic instruments. ‘Islands Song’ features singer Annika Henderson whose voice brings a new dimension to their modular synth sound. The second single to give us a glimpse at the full album, ‘Post Human Blossom,’ is accompanied by a video directed and animated by Mihailo Kalabic who creates an anatomically inspired, trippy visual illustration to accompany the fluid states represented by the sound of the track.

‘The Damaged Organ’ drops January 21, 2022 on Crazysane records.

Hanisii emerges and gives away little

The secretive artist announces an extended release which makes public his quiet experimentations

154099572_1315591265470759_2422918680005571617_n.jpg

Hanisii is an artist of substantial talent but a clear aversion to shifting focus from their sound to their public identity. For at least six years the Hanisii has been producing underground electronic music which touches on the genres of experimental and ambient among a wide spread of other influences. All these styles are in Hanisii’s repertoire when he comes to production, work which tends to produce tracks centred on lo fi and organic house.

As an ongoing project Hanisii has been somewhat sporadic with releases, and the artist had recently faded off the radar. Last month saw a premiere of a brand new album however, and details on the collection appeared in the following weeks, partly provided by the upcoming label ‘Time In The Special Practice Of Relativity’.

Titled ‘Klondike’ the album remains consistent which Hanisii’s minimalist style, with each of the eleven tracks given a numerical value rather than a stylised name. The full release flows on a glacier slow time scale, with most tracks reaching at least five minutes. That gives Hanisii a huge opportunity for creative movements and left field ideas, something that they take full advantage of. Our featured track leans towards a house vibe, but that’s one area travelled through on a longer journey.

Subtle explorations of experimental, from Taut

After a trail of engaging IDM tracks, Taut releases his debut LP ‘Sincerity’

Adopting the moniker of Taut, Jacob Bergson has been conducting his own experiments with electronic sounds for more than a decade, all while carving out a place for himself in the competitive New York City music scene. Though Taut finds time to connect with and draw inspiration from other producers who share an interest in exploring fresh avenues of sound, it’s clear that his own unique personality is enough to bring vibrant character to his work.

0024065264_10.jpg

Taut is the first solo project to come from this artist, but the quality of his singles released late last year have already been helping to establish his growing discography. Now the US based artist has made to the move to extended releases, finally dropping his first LP, a 10 track collection which wanders across genre boundaries.

Titled ‘Sincerity’, the album leans away from organic sound, and instead makes full use of synthesiser and modular textures. That’s not to say Taut disregards physical sound entirely, but appearances of muted drums and orchestral progressions arrive already having been altered to exist within the artist’s meticulously cultivated soundscape.

Within Sincerity you’ll find elements of glitch and IDM blending together with flowing synth, but the elaborate attention to detail is what finalises this LP.

Aqeel Aadam collaborates on downtempo, creating ‘Fault’

Together with contemporary artist Fossilize me, Aqeel Aadam delivers a detailed yet effortless EP

A neatly put together album of experimental downtempo, ‘Fault’ marks the coming together of two artists connected with the left field label Mystery Circles. Aqeel Aadam and Fossilize Me both released innovative debut albums in 2020, exploring separate paths into the sounds of ambient electronica. The pair shares an appreciation for expansive landscapes, layering together involved synthesizer work with percussive ambience. The overlap of interests between these two artists results in a collaboration which feels entirely natural.

headshot-1587751086847.jpg

Our featured track from the album is the work of Aqeel Aadam, a New York based musician who started out with bedroom beats and whose progression is evident in ‘Nails Grow Back’. The release revels in creating a detailed soundscape composed of modulated beats and sweeping synthesizers which manage to avoid encroaching on the central melodies at play. Aadam endeavours to blend in influences from atmospheric hip-hop and post rock, bringing to life new sonic worlds. It’s an ambitious approach, and part of the cause behind the albums alternative but polished quality.

The tracks contributed to ‘Fault’ by Fossilize provide a curious and effective contrast to Aadam’s less percussive inclusions. The outcome is an excellent balance between two perspectives operating within the same field, and an album with a gratifying narrative.

Vocals within multilayered experimental, Ameli Paul with ‘Open Fire’

Combining two different approaches to music, German duo Ameli Paul collaborate to form a united sound and a debut EP

151784275-2967922793476397-4413053402732055024-o-1614340501897.jpg

Ameli and Paul first began to share their unique perspectives on creating music back in 2016, a chance meeting marking the start of an electronic duo now stood atop five years of development. Giving their project the title of Ameli Paul, the pair has been working to balance the complimentary spheres of vocal harmony and experimental downtempo vibes. During that time, Ameli Paul have made various appearances on stage, evolving a live performance which has taken them around both the club and festival circuit.

The deeper electronic elements that build up the environments of this project are generally the work of Paul, whose use of synthesizers and field recordings encircles Ameli’s impactful vocal talents with a more intangible level of sound.

The duo has recently dropped their debut EP, through up-and-coming label MEIOSIS.  Comprised of two original tracks and a remix, the release explores moods both emotive and cinematic. Heading the collection is ‘Open Fire’, a track which ventures deep into electronic possibilities, drawing on synth melody and organic house beats to create an open-ended space. Eponymous follow up track ‘Beyond Reason’ leans into the pure quality of Ameli’s voice, contrasting it with the tension of muted electronica and leaving the listener adrift.

Coy Haste walks a desert path, with experimental groove

Working with creative dub funk label Stereo Ferment, Coy Haste brings to life folk rhythms

For the past few years, Coy Haste of Toronto has been creating percussion rich tracks of deep house. The handful of EPs so far released have drawn on funk vibes to colour the narrative existing within each collection, adding notes of tribal progression into his compact but high quality discography.

press-photo-03-small-1610428068285.jpg

The project is a solo venture from producer Brad Weber, whose previous work includes a role as drummer for Caribou. He’s been digging deeper into nu-disco sounds, releasing tracks with firm beats and experimental electronic kicks. There’s certainly an element of organic percussion in his work, but it makes up only part of a much more expansive environment which incorporates elements of world music, techno, and funk.

With the support of the left field groove label Stereo Ferment, Coy Haste has now released 'Apicultura', the first EP from the artist since 2019’s ‘Fennel’. The four track collection attempts to interpret a cultural origin story told in the Kalahari Desert, exploring themes of powerful natural forces, personal growth and ultimately new beginnings.

Modern electronic influence melds together with classic afro synth and tribal rhythms, bringing a sense of community to the journey. Our featured track expresses a hero’s path through melody and marimba.

9ms create an original atmosphere, with debut ‘PLEATS’

Taken off the upcoming album PLEATS out on Feb 26th.9ms is the duo of Simon Popp and Florian König. On their wide ranging debut album ‚Pleats' the tech-savvy ...

Turning electronic talents to percussion, 9ms reach a meditative and almost uncanny plane of sound

20201031-9ms-portraits-16-1613726970639.jpg

German experimental drum duo 9ms has opened the doors to their own unique style of electronic percussion, with the announcement of their debut album ‘PLEATS’. Released on the contemporary jazz label Squama, the seven track collection conjures up a convincing sensation of experimental space. Rolling beats mingle with symbol clashes and reverb echoes, in a performance which measures out exactly the right amount of energy and variety to push established boundaries without spiralling out of control.

9ms is comprised of Simon Popp and Florian König, the prior experience of each producer coming together in a new project which strives to achieve something hitherto untouched. Percussion certainly forms the base for their sound, but the capacity for exploration within that field is hardly constraining. Popp and König seem determined to cover every inch of possibility, bringing in a huge range of instruments without ever comprising on the core theme of each track.

In this creative environment PLEATS sinks into dub-like valleys of world music. There’s groove buried within tracks like ‘Rosi’ and ‘Raul’, but treated with such slow and careful deliberation that the vibe becomes something different altogether. Behind the illusion of scattered beats and wild leaps of sound are guiding hands drawing perfect symmetry.

Propulse take risks with new collection ‘Digiform’

The small town project gets off the ground with an experimental balance between glitch and idm

Propulse is a collaborative project, a joint venture into idm and experimental by brothers Kyle and Jon Wall. The pair are based in out in small town Ontario, working together to spread their sound out to other artists and listeners. Their connection with the Canadian label ‘A Person Disguised As People’ is serving as a way for them to do just that, with an EP already released last year and a more extensive five track collection dropping later this month.

Though the sound explored by Propulse in their earlier work with ‘A Person Disguised As People’ back in 2020 was structured around muted snare beats and a soft bass undercurrent, their upcoming release ‘Digiform’ moves into a more accentuated style of idm.

In tracks like ‘Glitterbroke 74’ and ‘Cloud 9 People’ the brothers lean more heavily on glitch, which a touch of acid house squelch. There’s a smoother quality to other inclusions on the EP though, with the inclusion of synth waves helping to blur the boundaries between the decidedly synthetic beats.

Our featured track ‘Digiform’ balances these somewhat contrasting tones, even moving to include organic, natural samples, as well as pads. Playing together with the glitch, Digiform is an experiment that pays off.
