Aqeel Aadam collaborates on downtempo, creating ‘Fault’

Together with contemporary artist Fossilize me, Aqeel Aadam delivers a detailed yet effortless EP

A neatly put together album of experimental downtempo, ‘Fault’ marks the coming together of two artists connected with the left field label Mystery Circles. Aqeel Aadam and Fossilize Me both released innovative debut albums in 2020, exploring separate paths into the sounds of ambient electronica. The pair shares an appreciation for expansive landscapes, layering together involved synthesizer work with percussive ambience. The overlap of interests between these two artists results in a collaboration which feels entirely natural.

Our featured track from the album is the work of Aqeel Aadam, a New York based musician who started out with bedroom beats and whose progression is evident in ‘Nails Grow Back’. The release revels in creating a detailed soundscape composed of modulated beats and sweeping synthesizers which manage to avoid encroaching on the central melodies at play. Aadam endeavours to blend in influences from atmospheric hip-hop and post rock, bringing to life new sonic worlds. It’s an ambitious approach, and part of the cause behind the albums alternative but polished quality.

The tracks contributed to ‘Fault’ by Fossilize provide a curious and effective contrast to Aadam’s less percussive inclusions. The outcome is an excellent balance between two perspectives operating within the same field, and an album with a gratifying narrative.

Aqeel Aadam is involving himself in the electronic community from his base of operations in New York, looking to blend the boundaries between the genres of hip-hop and modern electronic, and incorporating a passion for modular synthesiser that began back when he was a teen getting to grips with production.

Making more determined movements to establish his discography, Aadam released Daydreams in late September 2019, a short series of cinematic movements. That’s now been followed by an eight track debut album released on April 24th , and made in association with the LA Label Mystery Circles, continuing their pattern of linking up with artists who are out to experiment with imaginative sound.

The album was put together by Aadam using a Eurorack Modular, alongside standalone synthesizers and is titled ‘Hollow Moon’. The LP takes a trip into themes of anxiety with each track investigating a different aspect of the condition, building into the larger narrative of self- exploration and self-acknowledgement.

Our featured track is ‘Weighted Blanket’, smaller clicks leading into a gentle and essentialist melody which is covered by unapologetically dense synth. The downtempo vibe ushers in a mood of peaceful relaxation, which is calm but inescapable.

Emerging synth-work from Fossilize Me: Hatching

Fossilize Me has stepped into the electronic music scene with his debut album ‘Era’, supported by the record label Mystery Circles, an independent group from LA who have experience with searching out imaginative and experimental artists. They’ve previously worked with Elin Piel and more recently Scott Campbell, so Fossilize Me is producing in good company.

Era was made available on February 24th, but prior to this release exposure has been fairly limited for the artist, meaning that the representation of Fossilize Me’s creative identity is largely drawn from the 10 tracks within the album. The name is an alias of Dennis Smith, originally from Baltimore, whose style appears to be rooted in the fields of ambience and experimental. The edge to his work comes from the use of modular synthesizers, and influence of vintage Afro-Latin music. Percussion-style samples which feature in tracks like ‘Run’ and ‘Era’ become one face of the multi-layered electronic beat, though it’s the ambient synth that holds power.

The track featured today is the fourth on the debut album, ‘Hatching’. The melody floats over a light, simple beat which carries hints of both the organic and technological. Over that essential beat Fossilize Me contrasts tangible warmth and ethereal chatter.
