Turning electronic talents to percussion, 9ms reach a meditative and almost uncanny plane of sound

German experimental drum duo 9ms has opened the doors to their own unique style of electronic percussion, with the announcement of their debut album ‘PLEATS’. Released on the contemporary jazz label Squama, the seven track collection conjures up a convincing sensation of experimental space. Rolling beats mingle with symbol clashes and reverb echoes, in a performance which measures out exactly the right amount of energy and variety to push established boundaries without spiralling out of control.

9ms is comprised of Simon Popp and Florian König, the prior experience of each producer coming together in a new project which strives to achieve something hitherto untouched. Percussion certainly forms the base for their sound, but the capacity for exploration within that field is hardly constraining. Popp and König seem determined to cover every inch of possibility, bringing in a huge range of instruments without ever comprising on the core theme of each track.

In this creative environment PLEATS sinks into dub-like valleys of world music. There’s groove buried within tracks like ‘Rosi’ and ‘Raul’, but treated with such slow and careful deliberation that the vibe becomes something different altogether. Behind the illusion of scattered beats and wild leaps of sound are guiding hands drawing perfect symmetry.

Techno vibes and handcrafted beats: OBu’s ‘Thirty’

A new release from the Paris based electronica percussion specialist

For Maxime Buffel, aka OBu, the journey into music began early in life with an introduction to piano and drums. The impact of that introduction resonated deeply with OBu, igniting a passion to create and experiment with sound, as well as the confidence to follow through on that desire.

Following classical training in percussion at the Versailles Conservatory, France, OBu began to dig deeper into the possibilities of composing work which drew on both classical percussion and modern electronica. The producer now has a growing discography of house and techno to his name, invigorated by deep grove and melodies which look to cosmic horizons. OBu preforms both live and using turntables, with an interest in remixing tracks from fellow artists between focusing on his own releases.

OBu is also part of the electronic percussionist group Medium Douce, a project which has brought him onto the same stage as performers like DJ Virginia and Chez Damier. The carefully layered beats and experienced sense of rhythm which run through Medium Douce mirror the core of OBu’s solo work, the newest addition to which is a fresh two track EP titled ‘Thirty’. The release hums with organic beats, seated within and deep pad samples and given intensity by techno house waves.

Growing up in Sydney’s Hardcore Punk scene, Australian producer ‘Tunnel Vision’ has always had a certain affinity for gritty distortion, driving rhythms and all around counterculture. But it wasn’t until he discovered electronic music and producing beats that he was able to fully distill his own unique version of melancholic melodies and lofi soundscapes.

"Pay The Rent" flirts within dark and ominous atmospheres as an entry point into the young producer's emotive world of house. Interested in creating audio collages of nineties rave culture with a modern house sound, ‘Pay The Rent’ pays homage to artists like Legowelt and Luca Lozano, with pounding breakbeats & moody chords, evolving into an upbeat acid vibe.
