The experienced producer puts his own twist on the French DJ and musician’s seminal 2019 release ‘Orchestra’

Patrice Baümel.jpg

Growing up in East Germany in the communist era- identity and freedom were never things to be taken lightly. Despite the national growing pains occurring around him, Patrice remembers his childhood fondly and was exposed to a number of musical influences early on from his adoptive father who was a music journalist. When he was 14 years old the Berlin wall fell which ushered in a new era of both challenges and opportunities, along with a fresh rush of international music and culture.

Originally absorbing electronic music purely as a fan and club-goer it wasn’t until Patrice built up a small home studio that he started making his own tracks. Shaping his own distinctive identity, Baümel has forged a sound that continually breaks conventions and operates sometimes entirely outside the box. Take his 2008 club favourite ‘Roar’ for example, a 6 minute lesson in stripped back energy and crescendos that takes a couple listens to really wrap your head around. With a discography now spanning almost two decades and featuring influential imprints such as Kompakt, Get Physical, and Correspondant it’s easy to see why Patrice is still such an in demand producer and remixer.

Our track today puts his skills on full display, as Baümel breaks down ‘Worakls- Detached Motion’ into it’s constituent parts and reassembles them into his own stark interpretation. Maintaining some of the melodic and orchestral spirit of the original, Patrice places his own signature blend of minimalism, honed percussion and spurting white noise into the mix. Dizzying, pitched delays replace outright melody while synth stabs and automated effects keeps things swirling into the bare boned conclusion.

Techno vibes and handcrafted beats: OBu’s ‘Thirty’

♫ Stream / Download : https://idol.lnk.to/Thirty ⊙ Find more : https://www.uppwind.com/thirty-digital ✚ Follow OBu https://soundcloud.com/obuofficial https:/...

A new release from the Paris based electronica percussion specialist

For Maxime Buffel, aka OBu, the journey into music began early in life with an introduction to piano and drums. The impact of that introduction resonated deeply with OBu, igniting a passion to create and experiment with sound, as well as the confidence to follow through on that desire.

Following classical training in percussion at the Versailles Conservatory, France, OBu began to dig deeper into the possibilities of composing work which drew on both classical percussion and modern electronica. The producer now has a growing discography of house and techno to his name, invigorated by deep grove and melodies which look to cosmic horizons. OBu preforms both live and using turntables, with an interest in remixing tracks from fellow artists between focusing on his own releases.

OBu is also part of the electronic percussionist group Medium Douce, a project which has brought him onto the same stage as performers like DJ Virginia and Chez Damier. The carefully layered beats and experienced sense of rhythm which run through Medium Douce mirror the core of OBu’s solo work, the newest addition to which is a fresh two track EP titled ‘Thirty’. The release hums with organic beats, seated within and deep pad samples and given intensity by techno house waves.

Oneven explores the deeper side of minimal techno in 'Smelt'

Andrew Visser a.k.a. Oneven is a Dutch/British producer who’s output over the last couple of years has primarily been dominated by his ambient works which have ranged from the deeply diaphanous to a stereo spectrum of sci-fi splendour. Some of his explorations have been extremely cinematic and wouldn’t be out of place on a Kubrick soundtrack. This time however Visser goes in a different direction and ventures into the 4/4 universe with ‘Smelt’.

Starting off with a compressed thumping kick which sets the tone of for an infectious groove that starts to pull us in. Gradually we are introduced to deeper more introspective sounds that submerge us into a deep minimal track that sustains it’s groove throughout. Smelt offers a reliable take on deeper minimal and is perfect for building atmosphere in any warm up set.

Made In Paris leaves lasting impression with Forgotten Soul

Paris Forscutt a.k.a. ‘Made in Paris’ is not as you might guess a French native, she is in fact a woman of many talents hailing from Sydney, Australia. She has a busy international DJ schedule, she is the label boss of Upon Access, and is a well respected producer with her own material gaining the support of industry heavy weights such as Maceo Plex, Danny Tenaglia, and Tiga. Not only that, she is also an impressive vocalist as we can see on her new release on Upon Access “Forgotten Soul”.

Most House/Techno tracks usually take a few bars before they fully kick in, but Forgotten Soul grabs hold of you from the very beginning because of its haunting melody it continues to hold it’s grip through Paris’s pensive vocal. There is something about it that commands your attention. It’s like a sonic siren beckoning you into a hazy dreamscape because of what Forscutt has managed to do and excelled at in all of her work by creating a sense of brooding atmosphere. If you review her Soundcloud you can easily see this displayed throughout her productions as there is often a focus on darker hypnotic sounds.

In Forgotten Soul it seems Paris is in full creative flow creating a track rich in transcendent moments. It is a pure club track. This is a record that when used at the right time will create the kind of hands in the air moment that will leave a lasting impression. This is the kind of secret weapon any aspiring spinner should have in the bag if curating deep emotive moments on the dance floor is their main goal.

Personally I loved this track and will be adding it to my list of go to records for some time. If you check out Made In Paris’s back catalog you will see that she has a lot to offer, not just production-wise but in many different aspects of club culture. Among all of what she has put out I suspect Forgotten Soul will become a firm favourite with fans for some time to come.

New release from Cristian Vogel's live-to-tape alias 'NEL'

Taken from 'Jelly Vision EP' by NEL released 7 September on EPMmusic... Cristian Vogel reprises his NEL pseudonym for a second EP on EPMmusic to follow ‘Gaussi Fighter EP’ at the start of the year. His studio work as NEL is a departure from his more experimental album and sound design compositions and while these will continue, NEL tracks bear a closer resemblance to Cristian’s earlier production style, delivering tougher beats and rhythmic textures primarily using Modular synths in a hands on, improvised live-to-tape process. His ‘Jelly Vision EP’ opens with the statically charged ‘Tyrkisk Peber’, hot and peppery like it’s sweet namesake. Then, like a dawn awakening, the beat-driven ‘Equinox’ follows, while its deepness is juxtaposed by the shimmering brightness of ‘118 Days’. The EP ends with the hypnotic ‘Jelly Vision Dub’ and its penetrative sonic frequencies, to close another stunning EP from this masterful producer.

Vogel first came to prominence in the techno scene when he issued two EPs on Dave Clarke's Magnetic North Records label in 1994. After further solo EPs and collaborations with emerging UK techno artists such as Neil Landstrumm and Dave Tarrida, Vogel released his debut full-length, Beginning to Understand, in 1994 on Mille Plateaux, and subsequently became the first UK techno artist to be signed to Berlin's Tresor Records. He also started the vinyl only label ‘Mosquito’ with Si Begg, on which he released both his own music and other artists', and is considered to be one of the main founders of the No-Future collective that was active in Brighton during the mid-nineties. Alongside Jamie Lidell, he formed the group Super Collider, who released two albums and Cristian also sang and played guitar in his band project Night of the Brain, whilst continuing to maintain a presence on the underground techno scene.

Over a 20-year career, Vogel has been sought after as a remixer and album producer, having worked with artists such as Radiohead, Maxïmo Park, Chicks on Speed, and Thom Yorke. With further studio albums released on Novamute in the late noughties and albums for Sub Rosa, his most recent run of ‘techno’ productions culminated in a trilogy of long-players for Shitkatapult, ending with ‘The Assistenz’ in 2016.

His NEL project (NeverEngine Labs) was launched at the beginning of 2018 on EPMMusic, which has seen Cristian develop a different studio process to his album work and recent sound design compositions. While work under his own name will continue to explore new stylistic and experimental territories, the NEL tracks bear a closer resemblance to his earlier production style. The new pen name will be used for studio sessions created in a hands on, live-to-tape process primarily using Modular synths. “The sound is characterized by analog rhythms, textures and beats with an improvised flow.”

This spirit of improvisation and raw rhythms are summed up perfectly in his recent release ‘Jelly Vision EP.’ 4 tracks of live and eclectic recordings from Vogel’s studio, rich in rough, uncut textures, rhythms and soundscapes. The release skillfully balances spontaneity with coherent arrangements, clever sound design, and undeniable infectious grooves. Vogel proves with his ‘NEL’ alias that going back to basics is not only about drawing from the past, but is equally about the limitless creative potential of the future.
