octo17 experiments with hybrid forms on 'playtest'

Russian producer octo17 returns to the ADSR blog with a new track titled ‘playtest’, a hybrid form that takes elements from electro, deep house, and hip hop. The rhythm is unmistakably electro, with thick kicks and a boom-bap beat; but the pads and melodic elements are certainly more common in the deeper end of house music. And to round it out, the rap vocal samples give it an extra bit of swagger that will have you bobbing your head to the beat in no time.

Everything comes together to invoke, perhaps, early Drexciya, with their organic-yet-foreign, sunk-in-the-ocean pioneering form of electro. And yet, octo17 still flexes his modern production chops, creating a balanced frequency range that thumps in the lows and tickles in the highs. Combined with some unique atmospherics and well-tuned delays, the track rolls along nicely and would be hard pressed to keep anyone still on the dancefloor.

Charlotte Adigéry takes her Caribbean sensibilities somewhere deep with 'Paténipat'

The Belgian-Caribbean artist Charlotte Adigéry has a new single out called ‘Paténipat’, an infectious, stripped-back, 4-on-the-floor roller that is undeniably fun and will surely occupy your faculties for days to come. The Caribbean influences poke through, calling to mind a deep dub aesthetic, but the rhythms and vocal treatment build to an energetic frenzy that will fit right in on the dancefloor. Is it any wonder, then, that the forthcoming EP, titled ‘Zandoli’, is being released by DEEWEE, the label by Soulwax founders David and Stephen Dewaele? The brothers have built a name on their genre-defying combination of entrancing rhythms and bombastic musicality, and Paténipat fits that bill to a T.

The EP is a collaboration with producer Boris Pupul. The story goes that the pair originally met on Tinder and had the kind of heart-to-heart that only kindred spirits can; the friendship growing and solidifying into the forthcoming release. If the lead single is anything to go by, Zandoli’s release date of February 8, 2019 can’t come soon enough.

Check out the video for Paténipat above, and pre-order the vinyl or digital release over at the DEEWEE shop.

Made In Paris leaves lasting impression with Forgotten Soul

Paris Forscutt a.k.a. ‘Made in Paris’ is not as you might guess a French native, she is in fact a woman of many talents hailing from Sydney, Australia. She has a busy international DJ schedule, she is the label boss of Upon Access, and is a well respected producer with her own material gaining the support of industry heavy weights such as Maceo Plex, Danny Tenaglia, and Tiga. Not only that, she is also an impressive vocalist as we can see on her new release on Upon Access “Forgotten Soul”.

Most House/Techno tracks usually take a few bars before they fully kick in, but Forgotten Soul grabs hold of you from the very beginning because of its haunting melody it continues to hold it’s grip through Paris’s pensive vocal. There is something about it that commands your attention. It’s like a sonic siren beckoning you into a hazy dreamscape because of what Forscutt has managed to do and excelled at in all of her work by creating a sense of brooding atmosphere. If you review her Soundcloud you can easily see this displayed throughout her productions as there is often a focus on darker hypnotic sounds.

In Forgotten Soul it seems Paris is in full creative flow creating a track rich in transcendent moments. It is a pure club track. This is a record that when used at the right time will create the kind of hands in the air moment that will leave a lasting impression. This is the kind of secret weapon any aspiring spinner should have in the bag if curating deep emotive moments on the dance floor is their main goal.

Personally I loved this track and will be adding it to my list of go to records for some time. If you check out Made In Paris’s back catalog you will see that she has a lot to offer, not just production-wise but in many different aspects of club culture. Among all of what she has put out I suspect Forgotten Soul will become a firm favourite with fans for some time to come.

Serenity now with London's Sleepless

From 'Serene' Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/3LXOBHjYDBfZ7miS7Jg9gX?si=a2batCFWQtqmU18PZK_IFg Bandcamp https://sleeplessbeats.bandcamp.com Guitar on 'Process' performed by Rax Behéshti. Artwork @sleepsparrow

The classic downtempo, acid jazz sound is alive and thriving throughout Sleepless's 4th album, Serene.

While there isn't much info to be found on the man behind the beats, the music speaks for itself. It harks back to a simple time of bass heavy, laid back bobbers, with crisp snare snaps and the odd jazzy instrumental. I've been missing music like this. Sleepless recalls genre pioneers like DJ Cam, Dilla, Amon Tobin and more.

Serene, which dropped late last week is Sleepless's fourth album in five years. Each of his releases provide the lo-fi vibes which drew many of us into acid jazz and instrumental hip hop from the beginning. Serene, as an album is a pleasure. It's filled with smokey, back room sizzlers to help us fade into the night and early morning risers to bring us back. In our hard pounding, technological, unrelenting world, a little serenity is necessary to keep sane amidst the daily madness.

Stand outs from the 16 track album include 'Process' which features guitar work from Rax Beheshti, 'Don't Forget' which features smooth muted horns and the dreamy 'Where You At?'.

Don’t sleep on this release, go grab Serene on Bandcamp now.
