Baalti’s debut album brings together contemporary dance music and old Indian records

Sampling nostalgic sounds from their past, the duo creates a signature spirited sound

Baalti is the debut release by the eponymous duo Mihir Chauhan and Jaiveer Singh. Based in San Francisco, the Indian collaboration team began working together to explore the legacy of old Indian records and incorporate that past into today’s dance music. With a mutual love of sample-based music, the two artists bring the sounds of their childhood into the context of club culture, pursuing a sense of nostalgia as they merge genres that include Gujarati folk, Hindustani classical, and Bengali Disco with percussion and playful groove sounds.

The debut is released from the label Krunk Kulture which previously featured Baalti’s track ‘Ustad’ in their 2021 compilation album Thandai – Flavours of the East.’ The label is based in Mumbai and began as India’s longest-running booking and events agency, operating since 2009, before branching out into becoming a record label in August 2020 when they debuted with the compilation Kaala Khatta – Flavours of the East, featuring artists from around the world. Releasing music that puts a modern take on traditional sound, other albums from Krunk Kulture include Back to You by Punch M., The Painter by Alboe, and Big Fishes by Merak.

The playful tone of Baalti shows that Chauhan and Singh don’t take themselves too seriously, and the artists created the whole album largely away from outside influence while utilizing minimal equipment. These parameters resulted in a specific sound that manages to merge awkward sounds and clips with a smooth lofi feel that incorporates their cultural backgrounds with a warm, dance energy. The EP features four tracks ‘Aame,’ ‘Ustad,’ ‘Kolkata ’78,’ and ‘Me & You & Rob from M.A.D.’ All of which bring a high energy, but each varies in its pace and source material, resulting in an album of eclectic playful clips immersed in an upbeat and rhythmic shape.

Konrad Dycke finds his sound, with the Smooth & Staccato EP

Provided to YouTube by DistroKid Late Move · Konrad Dycke Smooth & Staccato ℗ sheppaяtøn Released on: 2020-04-11 Auto-generated by YouTube.

Konrad Dycke surrounded himself with music early on and never really stopped. At age 16 he had already begun producing music, taking inspiration from genres such as Dub, Chillout, Nu jazz and the iconic genre of German Krautrock. His drive to create and develop sound has led Dycke into the careers of piano teacher and sound engineer, keeping music the focus of his daily life.

Dycke began seriously establishing his presence in the electronic community around late 2015, working to create EPs with up-and-coming label Platform 7even, dropping the hypnotic class of deep house vibe the label was drawn to. Cultivating his personal brand of subtle bass lines and mixed house energies, Dycke spent the next couple of years working on a range of EPs, in which he collaborated with artists like Daniel Broesecke and Da.TO. When not releasing personal collections he’s been able to earn his credentials as an artist featured on variety LPs, making his way onto more than 20 albums.

2020 has seen a strong return to form, with the Smooth & Staccato EP. Three tracks of meticulously constructed minimal house cut with vocal samples that bring forth a curiously intensive pressure. It’s a release that demonstrates the genuine craftsmanship Dycke has developed over the years.

Minimal and deep with Romania's NTFO

‘Ro-minimal’ is the often used term to describe the unique blend of minimal techno and micro house crafted within Romania’s boarders. Pioneering DJ / producers Rhadoo, Inspirescu and Raresh worked within a tight knit community to build early iterations of the sound throughout the 90s and 2000s. But it wasn’t until 2006 when the wider world began to take notice, thanks largely to Chilean-born techno trailblazer Ricardo Villalobos. Booked to play an event in Bucharest with Raresh as the opener, Villalobos was so impressed with the encyclopaedic musical knowledge of the local producer / DJ that upon returning to Germany he advised Cocoon (his booking agency at the time) to immediately add Raresh to the roster.

Then in 2007, a much-needed platform for the rapidly growing home-grown sound was created with ‘Sunwaves’ festival. A 5 day festival on the picturesque Black Sea Coast in Mamaia, it’s quickly garnered international attention for it’s excellent lineups, lengthy sets and passionate crowds.

As the Ro-minimal sound keeps evolving, it will no doubt continue to be characterized by it’s strong local community and eclectic, drawn-out sonic modulations. And today’s guests- NTFO, certainly fits the bill as being a continuation of this dynamic, minimal Romanian sound.

The duo’s recent release ‘Dobr’ serves as an excellent entry point not only into this unique minimal sub-genre, but also into their already rich personal discography. The EP opens with the title track ‘Dobr’ establishing the clean and technical approach that unfolds throughout release. With just the right amount of coloration within the mechanical framework, Dobr EP is a shining example of not only the underground electronic scene in this region of the world but also of two experienced musicians at the peak of the powers.

Belgian producer Stereoclip goes back to basics with new track 'Day One''

With the plethora of sounds and production options at the fingertips of today’s digital musicians it’s no wonder that tracks can often get overcrowded and over-compressed. With TV and advertisements competing for our attention we are often bombarded with purposefully loud audio to grab our focus. While it is true that acoustically our ears often perceive ‘louder as better sounding’ there is often little room left for dynamics and fine details. Acclaimed American mastering engineer Bob Katz has even gone as far as saying “loudness is a drug.”

Nowhere is this more apparent than with the past couple decades of electronic music, where club-ready music often prioritized punch and loudness over dynamics and detail. Luckily for us the ‘loudness wars’ seem to be coming to an end, and as the dust settles we are finding more and more dynamic, uncluttered, and lush productions to soothe our battered ears.

Belgian producer ‘Stereoclip’ and his recent release ‘Day One’ certainly fit this description well, with the track maintaining a skillful balance between punch and dynamics. With just the right amount of high-quality raw ingredients, the track never feels cluttered or over-produced and instead floats with a kind of effortless groove. Delicate percussion dances in the stereo spectrum while thick analog synths twist and turn in the foreground. With more and more contemporary electronic music making use of a high dynamic range and a ‘less is more’ attitude we look forward to more producers taking this ‘back to the basics’ sonically-rich approach.

Growing up in Sydney’s Hardcore Punk scene, Australian producer ‘Tunnel Vision’ has always had a certain affinity for gritty distortion, driving rhythms and all around counterculture. But it wasn’t until he discovered electronic music and producing beats that he was able to fully distill his own unique version of melancholic melodies and lofi soundscapes.

"Pay The Rent" flirts within dark and ominous atmospheres as an entry point into the young producer's emotive world of house. Interested in creating audio collages of nineties rave culture with a modern house sound, ‘Pay The Rent’ pays homage to artists like Legowelt and Luca Lozano, with pounding breakbeats & moody chords, evolving into an upbeat acid vibe.

If you like your beats hazy, vibey and irresistibly musical, then Australian producer ‘Darks’ is definitely someone who should be on your radar. Hailing from the sunny eastern shores of Australia’s ‘Gold Coast’, Darks’ music is combination of laid back synth-driven soundscapes and nostalgia-tinged aesthetics.

Utilizing a variety of both digital and analog tools in the studio, the young producer creates head bobbing dancefloor tunes that are versatile enough to also flick on for those chill evenings at home.

Case in point, the breezy dancefloor heater that is ‘Fade in and Out’ released earlier this month on Melbourne imprint Clipp Art. It’s 5 minutes of tape washed ‘Gold Coast’ vibes, surfing the pixelated waves on that cruisey 303 bassline with soft pads slowly rolling beachward.
