Electro Magnetic Goldstar: Crafting Sonic Alchemy in Berlin

EMG's Musical Odyssey: A Sonic Journey Through Time and Space

Electro Magnetic Goldstar's latest project, an eclectic fusion of analog synths, soulful samples, and rhythmic break beats, serves as a testament to his musical journey. Drawing from a diverse range of influences, this Berlin-based artist takes listeners on a captivating sonic adventure. The album's unique blend of Trip-hop, Dub, and Electronica defies genre boundaries, creating a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly innovative.

Influences Rooted in New York, Enriched in London: EMG's Genre-Defying Sound

Rooted in the birthplace of Hip-Hop, New York, EMG's foundation in the art of sampling and drum breaks is evident throughout the album. These influences provide a solid backbone, anchoring his experimental sound in rhythmic nostalgia. His time in London, immersed in the city's SoundSystem Culture, adds layers of dubby texture and electronic nuances, enriching the listening experience. The album's evolution reflects EMG's journey from one musical epicenter to another, with each location leaving an indelible mark on his sonic palette.

Electro Magnetic Goldstar's Eclectic Soundscapes: A Review of His Sonic Odyssey

In 2019, EMG embarked on a period of introspection and artistic reinvention. The result is an album that not only pushes musical boundaries but also delves into the realms of visuals, circuit-bending, and electronics. This holistic approach to creativity is palpable in the album's immersive atmosphere, where soundscapes become landscapes and melodies weave intricate stories. Electro Magnetic Goldstar's self-titled debut album is a sonic tapestry that invites listeners to join him on this remarkable voyage through sound and soul.

Coy Haste walks a desert path, with experimental groove

Working with creative dub funk label Stereo Ferment, Coy Haste brings to life folk rhythms

For the past few years, Coy Haste of Toronto has been creating percussion rich tracks of deep house. The handful of EPs so far released have drawn on funk vibes to colour the narrative existing within each collection, adding notes of tribal progression into his compact but high quality discography.

press-photo-03-small-1610428068285.jpg

The project is a solo venture from producer Brad Weber, whose previous work includes a role as drummer for Caribou. He’s been digging deeper into nu-disco sounds, releasing tracks with firm beats and experimental electronic kicks. There’s certainly an element of organic percussion in his work, but it makes up only part of a much more expansive environment which incorporates elements of world music, techno, and funk.

With the support of the left field groove label Stereo Ferment, Coy Haste has now released 'Apicultura', the first EP from the artist since 2019’s ‘Fennel’. The four track collection attempts to interpret a cultural origin story told in the Kalahari Desert, exploring themes of powerful natural forces, personal growth and ultimately new beginnings.

Modern electronic influence melds together with classic afro synth and tribal rhythms, bringing a sense of community to the journey. Our featured track expresses a hero’s path through melody and marimba.

9ms create an original atmosphere, with debut ‘PLEATS’

Taken off the upcoming album PLEATS out on Feb 26th.9ms is the duo of Simon Popp and Florian König. On their wide ranging debut album ‚Pleats' the tech-savvy ...

Turning electronic talents to percussion, 9ms reach a meditative and almost uncanny plane of sound

20201031-9ms-portraits-16-1613726970639.jpg

German experimental drum duo 9ms has opened the doors to their own unique style of electronic percussion, with the announcement of their debut album ‘PLEATS’. Released on the contemporary jazz label Squama, the seven track collection conjures up a convincing sensation of experimental space. Rolling beats mingle with symbol clashes and reverb echoes, in a performance which measures out exactly the right amount of energy and variety to push established boundaries without spiralling out of control.

9ms is comprised of Simon Popp and Florian König, the prior experience of each producer coming together in a new project which strives to achieve something hitherto untouched. Percussion certainly forms the base for their sound, but the capacity for exploration within that field is hardly constraining. Popp and König seem determined to cover every inch of possibility, bringing in a huge range of instruments without ever comprising on the core theme of each track.

In this creative environment PLEATS sinks into dub-like valleys of world music. There’s groove buried within tracks like ‘Rosi’ and ‘Raul’, but treated with such slow and careful deliberation that the vibe becomes something different altogether. Behind the illusion of scattered beats and wild leaps of sound are guiding hands drawing perfect symmetry.

Ke Thu turn down the lights with ‘Salis’

Rising from a strong debut as support for DJ Boring, Ke Thu release their second impactful EP

Musical collaboration supports a sharing of experience, talent, and passion. It also means the synthesis of something new, as ideas collide and styles combine. Such is the case with Ke Thu, a project created by Detroit based electronic duo Tim Barrett and Steven Stavropoulos.

Together the pair has more than 20 years of experience at their disposal, built up as they separately experimented with bands and production, testing out genres including indie, experimental and techno. It’s the latter which feeds the core of Ke Thu, as Barrett and Stavropoulos delve into darker corners of techno and return with soft, shadowed synth and ambient echoes of deep dub.

The sound of Ke Thu slides into the echoes left at the end of the night; minimal and almost listless in the employment of moody IDM, but determined in the pursuit of club rhythms. Our featured track ‘Salis’ is drawn from the recently released ‘Bound Apart’ EP, and captures the ethereal moments of late night dance clubs.

‘Bound Apart’ was composed earlier this year as quarantine rolled in, leaving the two artists to cooperate from a distance. The EP is one of the few examples of 2020’s isolation giving way to a deeply communicative work.

Electronic habitat from Argentina, Barda: Paseo Telúrico

Barda brings forth a sound forged in the new waves of music spreading from South America. The music that Argentinian Cecilia Gebhard breathes life into has been affected by traditional percussion, dub bass, nu-folk and a Latin soul on its journey to the present day, with other influences obviously present.

The debut LP ‘Gruta’ dropped back in 2015 through the Fertil Discos music platform, and the trip from there has taken this artist between different labels and ideas. It’s an artistic history absolutely worth digging into if you can pick up the trail, with standout folklore led tracks from the three track ‘Botanas: Barda’, funk so natural it feels plucked from the earth in the Lembrança album and percussion which cleans the soul throughout her discography.

Back to the present, and Barda has been welcomed into Onda Mundial, an online platform fostering the growing community of Latin electronic artists and strengthening ties between creators. Through Onda Mundial, Barda has released ‘Paseo Telúrico’ a four track collection made public at the end of February and carrying a vibe of Cumbia dance music and organic groove.

Eponymous lead track Paseo Telúrico lays out a relationship between nature and machine, given character with a mix of cultural themes.

Michael Red flexes his dynamic range in remix of Kasm's 'Stargate'

Adam Hannibal A.K.A Kasm is a DJ, producer and label founder of the Juno award winning ‘Balanced Records’. A label based out of Montreal and Winnipeg that produces music that explores the more experimental and naturalistic side of electronic music. Over the last 15 years Balanced has released music that has consistently explored the fields of experimentation through multiple genres such as Dub, Reggae, House, Ambient, Hip-Hop, and Drum & Bass just to name a few. While doing this, Balanced has constructed a back catalogue of reputable music that has always explored the dynamics within these genres.

‘Stargate’ is a track that is no different. Working upon on what Kasm sets out, Michael produces something that is far from routine. Expanding the naturalist percussion Michael’s well-crafted sound design creates something of an immersive world. The clever use of panning and reverb throughout draws you into almost a cinematic headspace that is further compounded through its main melody that has a sense of urgency and purpose. While Red’s remix doesn’t stray too far from its source material, it seems he has taken some of the signature elements and dialled them all the way up to eleven giving us a more club focused version.

Lichtriss finds hope in the darkness on 'nachts'

‘nachts’, the final track on Lichtriss’ new EP titled ‘Glut’, lays its foundation with noisy, barely-harmonic electric distortions and reverberations that on its own would be interesting enough to fans of dark ambient and dub techno styles. Capturing the unending solitude of the vast expanses of our mechanized landscape is a central idea in these disciplines. But not long after setting this scene of midnight idle-industry, Lichtriss pokes through those endless nights with glowing synth pads that seem to offer refuge from that uneasy feeling that we may very well be living in a dystopia. As we progress, the glow continues; it confirms our hope, it reaffirms our existence as one worthy of life in this world. It leaves us with the message: no, our world is not good. But we are, and that might be enough.

Lake Turner gives lessons in patience on "Prime Mover"

“Prime Mover,” the eponymously titled single from Lake Turner’s brand new EP, is first and foremost a lesson in patience and composition. Eschewing widespread techno tropes like big bass drops and heavily saturated hi hats, the track builds deceptively, with melodic elements that enter the soundscape around a relatively straightforward rhythmic structure. This slow build makes for a surprisingly emotional release, giving the listener just enough air to prepare for a driving climax that confirms, without question, that this is more than just functional 4/4 beat music.

Have a listen for yourself, and enjoy the chromatic abstractions that visually accompanies the track. If you like it, Algebra Records has released a limited edition transparent vinyl edition that’ll look great on the shelf and sound better on the platter.
