Anchorsong brings us new tracks from his debut era after 10-years

The artist pays homage to his electronic beginnings by revisiting his first album

Anchorsong has released a Deluxe Edition of his 2011 debut album Chapters. Revisiting the tracks that established his name as a notable producer and multi-instrumentalist, the Deluxe Edition includes songs from that time that had never previously been released. As a Japanese musician, Masaaki Yoshida—under the alias Anchorsong—is based in London where he has been living since 2007. Known for his immersive and rhythmic performances, with the release of the original Chapters Yoshida set the precedent for the astounding artistic quality of his live performances. Notoriously unique, in each live performance Anchorsong creates the electronic music entirely live using an MPC2500 and a keyboard, performing either solo or with a string quartet.

After the release of Chapters in 2011, Anchorsong went on to release Ceremonia in 2016, Cohesino in 2018, followed by a deluxe edition in 2019, and finally Mirage earlier in 2021. Along the way there have been dozens of singles and EPs to emerge from the artist including ‘Remedy,’ ‘New World,’ and ‘Tunis Dream,’ this year, all of which culminated in the release of Mirage. In 2011, when Chapters first debuted, Yoshida began partnering with British independent record label, Tru Thoughts.

Ten years on, the latest Deluxe edition includes previously unreleased tracks including ‘Calling,’ ‘Breathe Breathe Me,’ and ‘Hit the Bottom.’ As an album that reveals new layers each time it is played, the fusing of rock, hip hop, and electronic is made dynamic and diverse through the meshing of beats and string instruments. The multi-layered energy of the album spans a range of feelings, all maintaining a percussive and edgy aura with Anchorsong’s highly detailed signature sound throughout.

Drums exceed the status quo in Popp’s new album

German Drummer Popp creates a bold statement in his latest album

Devi is the second album by German drummer Simon Popp. An engineer as well as a drummer, Popp has an undergraduate and graduate degree in jazz drums from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. With a unique approach to contemporary drumming, Simon has subsequently collaborated with artists and producers across genres, with captivating live sessions. His resounding and distinctive drumming caries his music to an admirable level of complexity.

Previously, his first solo album Laya was released in 2019 and was a percussive take on third stream minimalism, using ambient themes. This year he released singles ‘Holort’ and ‘Pingo’ which feature on his latest release, and last year he put out EPs Gahu Dub/Baixo featuring Fazer—one of his collaboration projects, preceded by the single ‘Lilac’ in 2019. In addition to his solo career, Popp tours with his other collaborative projects Fazer, 9ms, Abstand, and Runden. 9ms released Pleats earlier this year, with more of a lo-fi sound, and in 2020 Runden released an eponymous album with a percussive and jazzy feel.

Devi is an eight-track-album with a bold, idiosyncratic, and versatile drumming. Able to capture moments that are both uplifting as well as ominous, the album works as a self-reflection for Popp, representing the deeply honest and personal high and low times in his life. The exceptional skill in the drumming on this album reveals his passion for complexity, polyrhythm, and using recording techniques like heavy limiting and pitch-shifting. Popp’s command over the drums reveals the true potential, stretch, and range of what drum music can sound like today.

Percussive beats define Moomin’s latest release

Four new tracks carry a deep house style from the Berlin-based artist

The Snoofer is a new EP from Berlin-based artist Moomin. With a musical career that began collecting hip hop records, Moomin started to DJ in his hometown in Germany in 1995. Soon after, his small steps into experimentation with music production eventually grew, as he brought hardware into his practice, sampling jazz, funk, and hip-hop music from all of the records he had collected. Paving the way to his full transition to house music, he eventually moved from Kiel to Berlin to surround himself with the genre.

Moomin released his debut album in 2010, drawing positive attention from the German label Smallville records. Encouraged by the label to release a full-length album, Moomin released The Story About You in 2011. Subsequently, he released A Minor Thought in 2016, and Yesterday’s Tomorrow in 2018. With an extensive list of singles and EPs to his name, Moomin’s recent releases include For Willow from this year, Blackest Forest Ever—a collaboration with Julius Steinhoff released in 2020, plus Time Circle, A Day and a Night, and Concrete Grounds all from 2019.

The subtle, deep house style associated with Moomin are prominent in his latest release The Snoofer. The four-track EP begins with ‘For Willow,’ a relaxing and airy drum melody, overlapped with deeper drumbeats that roll listeners into the album. A remix of the track by Seb Wildblood follows, syncopating the rhythm of the original. The album’s title track ‘The Snoofer’ plus ‘Breathe’ keep the pace rooted in percussive drum sounds, floating with synth and bass to carry out the album to its close.

Lake Turner gives lessons in patience on "Prime Mover"

“Prime Mover,” the eponymously titled single from Lake Turner’s brand new EP, is first and foremost a lesson in patience and composition. Eschewing widespread techno tropes like big bass drops and heavily saturated hi hats, the track builds deceptively, with melodic elements that enter the soundscape around a relatively straightforward rhythmic structure. This slow build makes for a surprisingly emotional release, giving the listener just enough air to prepare for a driving climax that confirms, without question, that this is more than just functional 4/4 beat music.

Have a listen for yourself, and enjoy the chromatic abstractions that visually accompanies the track. If you like it, Algebra Records has released a limited edition transparent vinyl edition that’ll look great on the shelf and sound better on the platter.
