Coy Haste walks a desert path, with experimental groove

Working with creative dub funk label Stereo Ferment, Coy Haste brings to life folk rhythms

For the past few years, Coy Haste of Toronto has been creating percussion rich tracks of deep house. The handful of EPs so far released have drawn on funk vibes to colour the narrative existing within each collection, adding notes of tribal progression into his compact but high quality discography.

The project is a solo venture from producer Brad Weber, whose previous work includes a role as drummer for Caribou. He’s been digging deeper into nu-disco sounds, releasing tracks with firm beats and experimental electronic kicks. There’s certainly an element of organic percussion in his work, but it makes up only part of a much more expansive environment which incorporates elements of world music, techno, and funk.

With the support of the left field groove label Stereo Ferment, Coy Haste has now released 'Apicultura', the first EP from the artist since 2019’s ‘Fennel’. The four track collection attempts to interpret a cultural origin story told in the Kalahari Desert, exploring themes of powerful natural forces, personal growth and ultimately new beginnings.

Modern electronic influence melds together with classic afro synth and tribal rhythms, bringing a sense of community to the journey. Our featured track expresses a hero’s path through melody and marimba.

Islandman present groove rich rhythms, with ‘Aku Membawa’

For the second single off the forthcoming album, islandman team up with Danish producers Kenneth Bager and DJ Divo & OliO. 'Aku Membawa' is a shapeshifting h...

Fresh from a Boiler Room live set and performance for the London Jazz Festival, Islandman provide a glimpse of a new album

Islandman began as a solo project of Istanbul based producer Tolga Böyük over ten years ago, and has since grown to become a trio of multi-instrumentalists. Together with Eralp Güven and Erdem Başer, Böyük brings life to tracks rich with ethno-futuristic flavour.

The group’s discography is populated by tightly focused beats of percussion and wandering guitar melodies, creating a dreamlike landscape with a healthy spoonful of groove. At times the steady rhythms draw Islandman towards the genres of techno and house, but there’s no sense of attachment to this field. The inclusion of field recordings and experimental samples which emerge and fade away cultivate a sound which shifts beneath your feet.

A few years ago Islandman joined Music for Dreams, and is now focused on releasing their third album with the Denmark label. Promising to dig deeper into the trio’s dance floor moods the collection should arrive next year, as Islandman return to live performances.

Our featured single ‘Aku Membawa’ is taken from the upcoming album and welcomes DJ Divo & OliO to the studio, as well as Music for Dreams label boss Kenneth Bager. Reverb affected vocals present a balance between the organic and illusionary, but the dance floor vibe leads the track.

Premiere: Stimulator Jones illuminates jazz rich beats, with fresh soul

Drawing closer to next year’s release, Jones grants us a new taste of what’s to come

The work of Stimulator Jones (aka Samuel Jones) might have found its way to you through his previous label, the esteemed Stones Throw Records. Look forward to the cutting edge of this constantly evolving artist’s discography however, and you’ll find a fresh connection with Nordic label Mutual Intentions, and the promise of an upcoming sophomore LP.

Jones’s style always arrives smooth and polished, but quite how it’s delivered and where it’s sourced from are aspects far less easy to predict. Tracks have been centered around energy from the hip hop scene, then at other times turned to genres such as blues, or R&B. What tends to remain in play within the artist’s process is a soulful, genuine funk groove.

It’s true to say that vibe is present in the tracks released as a precursor to Stimulator Jones’s next LP, titled ‘La Mano’ and set for release in January 2021. How that feeling is encouraged to grow by Jones calls for a more detailed assessment however. It’s best to listen for yourself but the determination to keep production organic, handmade and personal in ‘La Mano’ shines through.

Today we’re introducing the next track to feature on the LP: ‘Drama Time’. Dynamic percussion and rich basslines take hold.

Inescapable groove of Luca Musto: Priscillo

Striking out on alone, Musto launches a new venture with his familiar deep sound

Luca Musto has roots in Italy, but his sound grew up during his time moving in and out of musical projects in southern Germany. The producer works with deep house, groove, and organic beats lost in a world of dense electronica. Back in 2016 he began to create and organise his discography along a more focused path, releasing his debut EP ‘Situations’ with the Cologne based label Feines Tier. Here he presented his personal blend of slow paced house, a style which Musto has continued to build upon and develop.

Now having established links with a range of labels and produced a handful of EPs capable of warming the atmosphere while cooling the progression of time, Musto is setting up his own platform for releases, ‘Rare Affair’.

The new project will be marked by the release of a two track EP which balances two contrasting tempos and moods. The eponymous track ‘Restless’ employs percussive beats which lose their form as they dissolve into the irresistible weight of the smoothed out beats. Its companion track ‘Priscillo’ takes a lower tempo, and as you wander through the light snare and entangled vocals, the sound pulls you in with a gravity that entraps.
