Not A Hologram: Authentic Environmental Electronic Music

Abigail Vettese is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a writer, botanical illustrator, and electronic music producer who is passionate about environmental ethics and exploring the heavier side of the sonic spectrum. Her work is raw and authentic, highlighting the importance of imperfection and embracing the chaos. Through her artistry, Abigail seeks to raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship and embracing the spontaneity of the natural world.

To witness the sprouting of Abigail’s sound, one simply has to listen closely to her releases thus far. Breaking ground in summer 2022 with her debut single ‘a j a r // p i g m e n t’ the release opens up with a biosphere of misty sounds and fluttering chords. While the track ‘p i g m e n t’ takes a harder edge, foreshadowing a darker side of the producer we see come to light in her newest release ‘Not a Hologram’.

Being her first full length album, ‘Not a Hologram’ feels like a good representation of Vettese’s journey in sound so far. Created in just over a month using an Elektron Model:Cycles, Novation launchpad, and Ableton Live to craft tracks that convey a sense of chaos and authenticity while embracing the fleeting experience of unconstrained creation. As the Elektron groovebox serves as the driving force throughout the album, motifs of dark minimalism and tribal vibrations begin to take shape. Tasteful touches of distortion and spurts of white noise can be experienced in the tracks ‘Dense’ and ‘Door is Closed’ while the more punishing notes of ‘Not a Hologram’ and ‘Impulse’ showcase the more extreme contortions of the 6 track FM Swedish sound sculpting tool.

RYECROFT’s Latest Album is an Experiment with Layers of Found Noise

The guitarist-turned-electronic musician continues to display his versatile capabilities

RYECROFT is the solo project of Yuki Hongo, a multi-faceted musician from Fukuoka, Japan. With years of experience as a guitarist living in Tokyo, Hongo ventured into the electronic music scene and genre in 2016, a move that brought his practice to Toronto, Canada. Hongo continues to perform in Japan and produces abstract sound installations, and his latest album Beautiful Variant, released this year, shows the next step on his electronic music path.

Debuting his electronic career in 2018 with the album Abstract Gene, RYECROFT’s tracks showed a distinct versatility and multi-angled approach to electronics. The first song on the album ‘To die a little’ is a more tranquil sound, and is followed by ‘Cut,’ which features piercing intensities and a command over electronic production. In 2020, his album Melt, featured ‘Defend us from Nation,’ which opened the album with an orchestral sounding, classical music-electro twist full of dystopian themes. His 2020 EP ‘Psychological Portrait’ featured this epic narrative sound with an existential tilt, plus found clips of water running. More recently, in his EP ‘Give’ in 2021, he returned to his guitar practice.

Beautiful Variant came out this year and is composed of 10 tracks that give a found sound feel and feature static effects, trance like beats, and more. The variability of intensities and rhythms throughout bring a shift of mood, moments of calm, and the manipulation of strong, clashing, and abrasive sounds through a multi-level experience of beeps, clashes, and scraping.

Promising premiere sounds from Byjayr

Carried by techno beats and a desire to create, the Canada based artist is forging a path

Byjayr is on the rise. As a visual artist she creates animation and murals, through which she expresses energy and a vibrant personality, elements which are drawn into her music with the same bold strokes. Jeena Ra is the name behind the alias, a Canadian born to Palestinian parents who began to make moves into the electronic scene in 2016 as a DJ.

This year Byjayr has oriented herself towards producing music beyond her live shows, connecting up with Aquarius Records, a label created back in 1969 which have helped support a variety of major names from Canada, including Corey Hart and Sum 41.

Innovation and upcoming talent are aspects which have attracted Aquarius Records in the past, and there’s much to expect from Byjayr in the future, in particular her upcoming debut EP ‘Siren’. However, for the time being the focus is on her track ‘Muhit’, a precursor to the full release of Siren.

In Muhit she ties together organic flute with subtle synth, introducing percussion edged bass that forms a core beat structure around which the flute relaxes into melody. There’s a feint towards a softer ambient tone, but the true character remains brooding and dark rooted in techno.

Welcoming in the season with 33x3 - Spring

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9rWyIwQPLI

Based in Bochum Germany, 33x3 is a burgeoning producer, and audio engineering student with a taste for vintage styled electronic music. Often producing music along the lines of deep house, synthwave, trip hop, or even funk, their use of mellow melodies, organic beats, and lo-fi analog synth is a constant in their varied collection of releases.

33x3’s assortment of gear is telling of a workflow that draws inspiration from a spectrum of sounds. Electric guitar and bass share a studio with a selection of analog synths such as the Korg Minilogue or Arturia Minibrute and Beatstep Pro. His tracks are then arranged in Ableton, and naturally as an audio engineering student, self mastered in iZotope.

Their latest track Spring, is a warm reminder of seasons changing. A wavy arpeggiated note leads the mood, and a steady and casual syncopated drum pattern carries the groove. In harmony with the lead, shimmering, reverb soaked synth is sprinkled throughout.

33x3 is an artist to keep an eye on in 2020. If you are looking for a diverse palette of uplifting and chilled out tunes, be sure to check out their collection of tracks on Soundcloud.
