A futuristic burst of drum and bass from Pixelord’s ‘202X’

Continuing to create cross genre tracks imbued with heavy bass, Pixelord enters the New Year with Moscow label Hyperboloid

Russia’s electronic scene is the home of many ambitious artists pushing forward into new experimental territories, and it’s from the midst of this volatile community that Alexey Devayin emerges, a producer better known as Pixelord.

Pixelord has toyed with IDM, glitch, and created some heavier drum and bass tracks with an energy that sweeps through the room. It’s clear that the confines of sticking to one genre don’t appeal to the artist however, and the desire to employ new elements and attempt fresh styles is the common theme that runs through Pixelord’s work.

In the past Pixelord has worked together with such labels as Leisure System and Infinite Machine, and was asked to perform at the first ever Boiler Room session held in Russia. His most recent label connection has been with the bass leaning collective Hyperboloid Records, who encourage the eclectic type of community in which more creative producers are able to thrive.

Our featured track comes to us via the Hyperboloid 2021 compilation album, which features artists both old and new to the label. Within ‘202X’ the worlds of future bass and garage collide, generating intense levels of energy with a cosmic edge.

UK Apache with Shy FX - Original Nuttah 25 is out now - Listen here: ADA.lnk.to/OriginalNuttah25 https://www.facebook.com/ShyFX https://twitter.com/ShyFX https://www.instagram.com/ShyFX https://www.instagram.com/ukapachetheoriginalnuttah

With the golden days of sound system culture long-gone, every now and then we get some throwbacks. Occasional Dillinja remasters, sporadic DJ Aphrodite shows or a rare Goldie releases to name a few. End of 2019 summer is rewarding all of the junglists out there with a re-recorded version of one of the most influential tracks in the underground scene of UK – Original Nuttah 25 by UK Apache and Shy FX released on cult.ure (Shy FX’s output).

It is quite challenging to find a true jungle sound these days which makes this release a treat for any lover of deep bass, Jamaican vocals and amen breaks. Alongside the remix, by Chase & Status, this 2-track is a great throwback to the golden era of this genre. Saul and Will from C&S did justice on the original, as expected after their remix from 2017 of another jungle classic – Valley of the Shadows by Origin Unknown.

‘Original Nuttah 25’ is simply a truthful recreation of the original with the mighty Idris Elba on mic duties, with a twist on the drum groove and the overall sound updated to today’s standards.

Here’s to another 25 years of lively basslines, chopped up funk breaks and soulful vocals.

When it comes to drum and bass and jungle Andre Williams a.k.a. Shy FX needs little introduction. Being a pioneering force in the genre while breaching the charts on many occasion with his infectious club bangers, sound system roots and sharp instincts on artists he chooses to collaborate with, Shy has been able to navigate that fine line between holding your underground credibility while also gaining mainstream appeal. This is the exact kind of savvy that is in full effect in his latest release ‘Roll The Dice’ feat. Stamina MC and London’s own pop darling Lily Allen.

With a line up like that its kind of hard to miss and to be fair they set it up and knock it out of the park. What our earbuds are treated to is a modern take on the nostalgia of 90’s bass culture. You are transported to the time when clubbing was fresh out of the gate brimming with excitable energy, striding almost on the side of danger, knowing for one special night anything could happen. The track and accompanying video by Louis Browne encapsulates that energy perfectly, there is enough bass to make your bones shake and the combination of Stamina MC’s on the mic delivery harmonizing with Allen’s vocal creates fever pitch party frequencies that resonate throughout. This is a straight up sound system stomper that is perfect for for any rude-boy / rude-girl’s night out.
