Woozy techno from Frankey and Sandrino: ‘Boson’

Embracing curious synth and tangible bass, the duo return with a multidimensional EP

Frankey and Sandrino have been working together for over a decade now, steadily building up a discography that sits within the experimental regions of house and techno music. The work produced by the two Germans has been evolving ever since they first hit the scene, establishing new milestones with each new release.

Their sound is often centred on resolute house beats and dark bass, but the hypnotic repetition of low tones finds an alternative force in Frankey and Sandrino’s carefully orchestrated experimentation. Sharper edged electronica and percussive snaps find their way into the mix, delivering a physical energy which elevates tracks as they gradually climb to new heights and reach for fresh directions.

Although Frankey and Sandrino are each based in a major German city, their newest EP arrives supported by Tokyo label Mule Musiq. While the geographical distance between the two parties is significant, Frankey and Sandrino have found strong artistic links in the label’s ethos and interests, entering into an international community of likeminded artists.

The two track EP is titled ‘Boson’, and kicks off with a title track of the same name which sparks with heavily manipulated electronic samples and melodic synth; assured in its rhythm, and multi-layered in its irregularities.

Etyen pushes the Nuklear button with his explosive entry into Techno

For an artist who describes himself as a producer and sound designer who “wears many hats” exploring multiple genres such as indie, downtempo and electronica, Beirut based Etyen sure does have a firm grip on what makes good techno.

Being an artist whose output is already vast and varied, I don’t know if he will continue to develop his interest in four x four beats, but I for one will be hoping to hear more of this kind of idm-tinged dancefloor sound well into the future.

Nuklear is a track laden with all kinds electronic influences; Bass, IDM, Breaks, Electro and of course forward driven Techno. What Etyen has stitched together is a track that feels like it has an urgent destination while taking side steps that flare expressions of all the aforementioned genres. Offset rhythms, and saturated sound design add to a production that wants to take you through the halls of an everything rave, while peaking through every side alley of this subterranean space until you arrive at the main room which is where a stomper like this would be right at home.

If you are a fan of driving techno that is a departure from the typical linear approach of build up - drop -breakdown, Nuklear has enough micro moments to keep you locked in until the end.
