In the midst of a turbulent era the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene remains alight, with talent out there ready and willing to tackle major themes and bring expression to feeling unvoiced. Keeping the sound alive from his home state, Pk Delay has long passed the title of upcoming, creating his own tracks for more than half a decade and gradually building up the layered style he’s recognised for. In his discography carefully chosen words match together with lo-fi beats, smooth bass building up a foundation for contemporary narratives.

Still pushing forward today, Pk Delay has connected up with Valholla Entertainment, a Florida based label which deals in high quality rnb and hip-hop production. With the support of Valholla, February saw the release of Pk Delay’s newest collection, titled ‘Punter’.

The nine track release draws on low tempo beats, and enough subtle electronic melody to garner a sense of nostalgic. The LP also brings in two more Pittsburgh based rappers, namely Benji. and My Favorite Color, who lend their own vocals skills to mix.

There’s a mood of melancholy running alongside the emotion heavy lyrics laid onto each track. Faded piano loops, feather light synth and measured beats wrap around a truthful voice.

DC Duo The Other Guys recreate LA Soul with ‘Los Angeles Shorty’

"Summer In Analog: Season 2" | Available Now: http://hyperurl.co/Summerinanalog2 Official Video for "Los Angeles Shorty" by The Other Guys Produced by: The O...

The beat focused producers release another effortless collection in their instrumental series

Mighty Joe and Isaiah are producers based in DC, but the sound and style they’ve been working on as the hip-hop beat duo ‘The Other Guys’ has forged connections across the country. The two have been deep in the beat community for a long time, bringing out vibes that glow with soul. The Other Guys specialise in music that gets heads nodding and energy flowing. Over the years they’ve lent their talents to areas like chill-hop, jazz-hop, boom-bap and study beats, keeping the vibe alive throughout.

A sound like that of The Other Guys draws a crowd, as well as other artists looking to collaborate. The two have found themselves working with the likes of Skyzoo, Tanya Morgan, Homeboy Sandman, J-Live, Substantial, Wordsworth, Young Roddy and Kooley High. New links mean new flavours, and the variety of artists featured on The Other Guys tracks has been nothing but beneficial to the duo’s growth and evolution.

Despite the frequency of joint projects, instrumental releases are dropped regularly by Joe and Isaiah, and it’s on such a collection that our featured track ‘Los Angeles Shorty’ has arrived. Slow and sweet, the song is one of seven low tempo tracks on the recent album ‘Summer In Analog: Season 2’.

Personal environments through a Lo-fi filter

https://brrwd.bandcamp.com/album/everything-was-beautiful on Cassette & Digital Photo by: Repeat Pattern

I’m often drawn to genres like chiptune, or vaporwave. I love how effectively artists manage to incorporate samples from the technology heavy environments they grew up in, reconstructing that personal, private atmosphere. Done properly, it can connect those isolated moments in our past to the experiences of others, creating this kind of ephemeral nostalgia.

In their new release ‘Isolation’, the artist Teams manages to beautifully integrate elements of these genres into a track which still falls firmly on the side of lo-fi. Deep warm vibes in the background support a multitude of handpicked samples, the diversity of which makes this a track which is easy to get lost in. The decision to also include some hi-fi and lo-fi vocal samples is effective, with the hi-fi keeping the track a little more grounded in reality and the lo-fi doing the opposite. Addition of Japanese and almost indecipherably soft sounds also produces that atmosphere of experiences half forgotten.

I feel like music that succeeds in hitting such a contemporary note eventually becomes harder to fully access, just as I can’t entirely appreciate a track like The Who’s ‘My Generation’. ‘Isolation’ is one of those tracks which manages to reproduce a very specific and personal environment.

Organic Lo-Fi with Pinz & Pelz

Artist: Pinz & Pelz Format: Digital EP Title: A Purer Life EP' Release Date: September 27th, 2019 Support it: https://pinzandpelz.bandcamp.com/album/a-purer-life Pinz & Pelz: https://soundcloud.com/pinzandpelz https://www.facebook.com/PinzandPelz --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Houseum: https://soundcloud.com/houseum https://www.facebook.com/houseum.yt https://www.instagram.com/houseumrecords https://houseum.yt@gmail.com

The new release from Berlin/Sidney duo Pinz & Pelz, ‘A Lazy Day’, carries with it vibes of old school house, smoothed out and brought back from the club to more personal setting. Pinz & Pelz tend to produce more chilled out music, intermixed with occasional breaks and sharper samples that give their sound an edge.

With a slightly bulky start, ‘A Lazy Day’ takes a moment to collect itself together. The introduction could almost be called a little experimental; different samples and instruments fade in then quickly but softly fade out again. The snatches of organic instruments and waves of cosmic harmony flow over more concrete synth beats, as the assortment of sounds which interact throughout the song gradually emerge.

At about 1:20 some great electronic melodies begin to weave together the track, incorporating some creative wind and percussion from instruments including African mallets and a Persian Ney flute. The resultant sound is actually a little playful, with a sense of potential and variety. That this is a song which fits with a mellow vibe is clear, but there’s also a sense of a natural environment being expressed, the physicality of the organic samples used preventing the synth melodies from overriding the feel of the track.
