Analog synthesizers unite the vibrations between mathematics and composing

The latest release from Daniele Sciolla represents his turn away from musical norms

Spin of Synth is the latest EP from Italian musician Daniele Sciolla. An artist across disciplines, Sciolla’s educational background includes the Turin Italian Jazz Academy, the Conservatory of Music “GF Ghedini,” and the mathematics department at University of Turin. With a style described as ‘ironic and polished,’ Sciolla uses synthesizers as a vessel to combine classical music studies, composition, and mathematics—the organizing principle at the base of his work that allows him to create perceptions of different speeds and times.

Daniele Sciolla’s solo album Miniature Per Sintetizzatore was released in 2018, and in addition he has numerous EPs and singles to his name including: Varietà, Sinthesi, Wns, Carezze, Fs, Get Alone, Please, S.T.N.D.B.M., and Old Room. Until now, his most recent release in 2020 was an EP entitled Synth Carvial, a fast-paced, high-intensity collection of tracks that utilized tens of analog synthesizers. Comprised of algorithms, formulas, and mathematical calculations, Synth Carnival provides a window into Sciolla’s process and the foundations for his newest EP.

Spin of Synth employs Sciolla’s signature use of numerous synthesizers to create a chorus of sounds. His sensibility proves that he takes no noise for granted in his composing, and when it comes to live performances, he is known to incorporate well-considered visual elements whether they be lighting or created components. This release proves no different—one track on the EP, ‘Jupiter’ highlights the endless timbre variations that occur between the analog machines. From a single catalyst, Sciolla is able to create myriad results that he layers and crushes in a surrounding sound. The track symbolizes a path away from musical norms for the artist and is accompanied by a video that has buildings collapsing and re-emerging in coordination with the sounds. The other four tracks featured in Spin of Synth equally dive into the mathematic cornerstones of music production through Sciolla’s mastery of analog synthesizers.

Dip into nu-jazz with Gianni Brezzo’s ‘The Awakening’

Gianni Brezzo - The Awakening, taken from the upcoming Jakarta Records debut EP "The Awakening" to be released on 12th of March; pre-order rh https://giannib...

An intimate coming together of organic sound laced with jazz synthesiser marks Gianni Brezzo’s newest collection

Marvin Horsch is the producer at the head of moody jazz project ‘Gianni Brezzo’. A multi-instrumentalist based in Cologne, Germay, Horsch has been long been invested in the nu-jazz scene. Light percussion, soft focus synth and a stir of soul have guided this artist’s exploration deeper into jazz tones, resulting in music which soothes the mind while moving the body.

The next milestone for Gianni Brezzo will be ‘Awakening’, the project’s first EP on German label Jakarta records. So far only a handful of tracks from the collection have been made public, but the environment starting to form promises gentle warmth, heated with passion.

Gianni Brezzo normally expresses emotion through entirely instrumental work, often returning to Horsch’s appreciation for acoustic guitar as a core feature. The Awakening welcomes a number of artists affiliated with Jakarta records however, infusing the vocals of singers such as J.Lamotta and Otis Junior into the soulful mix.

The personality at the heart of this upcoming release remains that of Horsch, and the organic quality melts away any distance between the creator and audience. The track for which the album is named is particularly representative of the artist’s moments of clarity in connection to his personal creative process.

Julian Zyklus brings elegance and power with 'Waking Lights'

Provided to YouTube by Cargo Waking Lights · Julian Zyklus Waking Lights ℗ Hush Hush Records Released on: 2020-07-03 Artist: Julian Zyklus Auto-generated by ...

When Julian Zyklus released his first solo album back in June, he already had prior involvement in alternative rock as well as experience with piano and synthesizer. He showcased more than these talents however, managing to create a harmonic balance between the more traditional sound of classical and the much less organic tones of synthesizer-led downtempo and electronica.

‘Four Dimensional Waves’ was a collection which succeeded in shying away from the more conventionally subdued sound of minimal electronic, while also establishing an intense, cinematic core. His newest release remains in that space between emotive classical and synthetic elegance, and precedes his upcoming album ‘Parallel Worlds’.

Pre-release track ‘Waking Lights’ brings forward digital melodies which exist in separation from the echoing samples of piano placed in the stereo field. This division leaves a feeling of physical distance, as if the melody is surrounded by an oceanic darkness. The sense of restrained power is heightened as distortion and synthesizer grow to a crescendo.

‘Parallel Worlds’ itself is a split album, shared between Zyklus and Hoshiko Yamane. Yamane is a Berlin based violinist and current member of ‘Tangerine Dream’, a group legendary for their work in pioneering early electronica. With such a strong partnership, Parallel Worlds promises to be a high quality release.

A long awaited LP from a secretive artist; ‘Filmhouse’ delivers

Provided to YouTube by DistroKid Ecdysis · Filmhouse The Curtain ℗ Filmhouse Records Released on: 2020-05-15 Auto-generated by YouTube.

Filmhouse is not a producer who presents an easy to identity social presence. His online identity seems only to be defined almost totally by the artistic work he makes public.

Instagram appears to be Filmhouse’s most active space on the net, where the artist has built up a gallery of experimental clips over the past two years. Scrolling through you’ll find tracks which range in length and content, taking on small creative themes in small doses, and sometimes moving up to works more adaptable for a full release.

While social media is recognised as a conventional way to generate publicity, a decidedly unusual habitat has been developed here. Taking serious effort to avoid a detailed understanding of his background, Filmhouse has taken the Daft Punk style approach of hiding his face behind an elephant mask. Visit the page and you’ll find monochrome videos of experimental electronica, created by an elephant using a wide range of instruments including guitar, synthesiser and percussion.

In addition, you’ll notice the cult following building up around Filmhouse, who have been waiting for the recently released debut LP ‘The Curtain’ for a while now. I think that the nine track release of lo-fi, melancholy melodies and stereo placed vocal samples is just what they’ve been hoping for.

Finding hope in a Dystopian future with the Nowhere EP

Russian producer Evgenii Popov paints a bleak, grayscale world of the not-too-distant future with his new release- Nowhere EP. An uncluttered sonic approach, utilizing mostly his modular synth to drive the album, creates a cohesive and convincing landscape of deserted dissonance, rich arpeggiations, and even some glimmers of hope.

The EP opens with the track ‘hiding from the storm’ which gradually introduces the listener to this kind of post- apocalyptic reality. With subdued pads and and filter sweeps gradually giving way to rich stabs of electricity, the track feels warm but with an underlying air of instability.

’White Sun’ builds on this false sense of security with an almost inviting first couple minutes of slowly morphing synths and deep reverberations. But this is not the world we once knew, and just as quickly a maelstrom of electronic modulations are unleashed upon the unsuspecting listener. All the while Popov maintains a solid balance of rich melodies amongst the arpeggiated chaos.

Lastly ‘bridges’ leads us through an epic 9 minute journey of peaks and troughs complete with otherworldly voicings and delayed serpentine synthesis. At moments it feels as though this is just a dead end, and humanity is destined for disaster. But the contemplative and melancholic last few minutes hint at a sense of resolve and even hope for the future. A future that perhaps we are heading aimlessly towards, but we are certainly heading somewhere.
