Exploring the Ambient Depths: Henrik von Euler's 'Små Vågor 6' Unveils New Sonic Horizons

Henrik von Euler, the creative force behind Små Vågor, has been a notable figure in Sweden's music scene for over two decades. His work spans a broad spectrum of musical styles, yet he has consistently focused on experimental instrumental music. Von Euler's contributions are diverse, from collaborating in cinematic ambient projects like Jäverling ◊ von Euler to engaging in synthetic electronic funk with Rigas den Andre, showcasing his versatility and commitment to exploring new musical territories. His artistic journey mirrors that of a modern-day Ralph Lundsten, with a dedication to discovering unique musical expressions within the expansive landscape of sound.

Throughout his career, von Euler has crafted a discography that highlights his penchant for innovation and experimentation. His Små Vågor project, in particular, has become a vessel for his explorations in ambient, drone, and electronic music, marking his significant influence on instrumental music in Sweden. Each album in the Små Vågor series builds upon the last, weaving a complex tapestry of sound that reflects von Euler's evolving artistic vision. His work, often characterized by its experimental nature, invites listeners into immersive soundscapes that blend traditional instrumentation with electronic elements, creating a unique auditory experience that defies conventional genre boundaries.

"Små Vågor 6" is the latest manifestation of von Euler's artistic exploration, offering a compelling blend of Roslagen ambient, electronic granite jazz, and dubby drone. Recorded against the stark backdrop of the Baltic Sea's cliffs, the album features a notable lineup of collaborators, including Johan Berthling and Leo Svensson Sander, enriching its sonic depth. With tracks that flow seamlessly into one another, the album invites listeners on a meditative journey through sound, showcasing von Euler's mastery in crafting atmospheric compositions. The release of "Små Vågor 6" under the Flora & Fauna label not only adds a valuable chapter to von Euler's discography but also stands as a testament to his enduring impact on the realm of experimental music.

Jäverling ◇ von Euler shed light on upcoming Flora & Fauna collection

With the release of their downtempo single Drömstadie, the duo give a preview of upcoming Swedish collection album ‘Nattmusik’

An electronic duo based in Sweden, Rickard Jäverling and Henrik von Euler are both experienced producers in their own right. As solo artists and collaborators in a number of projects, they’ve been creating downtempo tracks which help bring a pause to stressed minds and hectic lives. As Dödens Dal they combined their talents and complementary processes to piece together albums within which they cultivated natural, organic instrumental led tracks to form peaceful soundscapes.

Despite leaving the project of Dödens Dal behind, the two have continued to work together, with further LPs exploring other avenues of their calming sound. These have been released on the Flora & Fauna label, which Von Euler has been running for around 15 years.

It’s through Flora & Fauna that the duo’s newest track ‘Drömstadie’ has been released, one of the first few tracks available from the upcoming ‘Nattmusik’ compilation, which will feature work from some of Sweden and Finland’s most talented producers of ambient and instrumental music.

The final release will be on September 10th, but four tracks have already been made public, each ascribing to Flora & Fauna’s deep electroacoustic vibe. Jäverling and Von Euler’s contribution is measured out with percussion and dreamlike melodies.

Electronic life, raised by Jäverling ◇ von Euler with Blank yta

Rickard Jäverling and Henrik von Euler have a longstanding history of working together, largely through their previous project Dödens Dal, which ran from 2013 to 2016. The three albums they released during this time were launched by Flora & Fauna, the influential Swedish Label which von Euler has been running for the past 15 or so years.

Jäverling’s work as a solo artist and through various collaborations seems built upon his experience with instrumental and acoustic, elements in his sound that often act as a starting point to build up to something more experimental. Von Euler has also taken the chance to adopt a more hands-on approach, creating both on his own and with other artists. Both artists favour an atmosphere of calm, and it seems likely this blending of styles unfolded naturally, each welcoming the other.

The duo announced their first album as Jäverling ◇ von Euler back in 2018, an art piece soundtrack consisting of ten tracks. It’s now being followed by LP ‘Musik for trädgårdar’ slated for April 24th and featuring music inspired by gardens. As expected of this pairing, the sound feels to be warm and alive, with shimmering tones and piano notes like raindrops.

Unique moments from Små Vågor - Fyrtornet

Provided to YouTube by IIP-DDS Fyrtornet · Små Vågor 4 ℗ Flora & Fauna Released on: 2019-09-20 Artist: Små Vågor Auto-generated by YouTube.

Hailing from Sweden, Ambient/Drone artist Henrik von Euler has worked under a number of monikers, and consistently produced note-worthy tracks with each incarnation. Euler also has 15 years of experience running the Swedish label Flora & Fauna, releasing music with a wide variety of artists. His new track Fyrtornet comes as part of his fourth album produced under the pseudonym of Små Vågor, meaning small waves.

With field recordings of bird cries and wind, the sound produced sometimes borders on desolate, but the deep bass and alien flickers of synth which guide the track also help to bring in a feeling of warmth. Drone is a genre that can at times be jarring and aggressive, but again, that lower bass does so much to calm and reassure the listener. It could also be viewed as being experimental, but doesn’t cross the boundary where the desire to do something different leaves a track creative but unorganised.

Fyrtornet is the type of song that could be listened to at any time, but will resonate much more strongly if the listener is able to stumble into it at just the right moment. Headphones on a cold day, alone at 2am, the day reaching twilight; in slightly otherworldly and unique atmospheres like these, Fyrtornet can amplify that unique aesthetic.
