Looking past boundaries, Apostrophic’s Clarity of Noise

Provided to YouTube by DistroKid Clarity in Noise · Apostrophic It Is What Is It ℗ Tastefaker Released on: 2020-03-27 Auto-generated by YouTube.

The first major album came from Apostrophic back in 2014, a six track journey somewhere between electro-acoustic solace and mellowed beats of UK garage. Based in Vancouver, Apostrophic takes notes from artists like Four Tet and Caribou, letting the music that inspires him feed into something more personal, and more experimental.

Laying out the materials that go into his sound seems to leave a surprisingly varied range of sources to pull from. The drum samples led by lines of snare drum are at home with the garage vibe, but at times the synth warms up tones of cosmic. Vocal samples fade in from the background like loops of futuristic drone, then later thicken into a harder bassline or end up being cut and scrambled.

In his second LP released early last year, standout tracks like ‘Waldorf’ feel like they’ve been patched together from Apostrophic’s toolbox, changing the rules throughout while skilfully avoiding losing grip on the song’s momentum.

The newest album ‘It is what it is’ released at the end of March 2020, and rounds off with ‘Clarity of Noise’; a mosaic of drone, classical and garage. This artist continues to present tracks with no respect for genre conventions, selecting what sounds best and managing to assimilate.

Lost in an ocean, Caramel Smooth Heaven finds you

It’s hard to imagine the overwhelming solitude of drowning in the ocean. But that’s exactly what New Zealand artist Caramel Smooth Heaven aims to portray in this new album, “The Shallows.” Heavy stuff, to be sure. Though while the emotions are weighty, the production here on the lead single, “Blue Clouds,” is restrained. The skittering garage-influenced drums, no doubt familiar to fans of Jamie xx, provide just enough structure for the pulsing, saturated synth pads that propel the track. The result is a moody, vulnerable composition that pays respects to the beautiful tyranny of nature.

Releasing this single is Kaiseki Digital, a unique label that aims to sonically capture the spirit of Kaiseki, a Japanese culinary technique that tells a story with food. If you enjoyed “Blue Clouds,” you’ll love the full album, which is available now for just $2 on Bandcamp. Support!
