Palm Skin Productions takes a new approach in his latest release ‘Other Times’

Veering away from the conceptual basis of his debut track, his latest album features a collage of sounds

Palm Skin Productions is UK-based DJ, producer, and percussion beat-making musician, Simon Richmond. Having spent over ten years writing and producing music for other bands and artists, Richmond launched his solo career with his debut single in 2021, “This Sword Will Die.” Now, releasing Other Times, he sees it as a palette cleanser inspired by his work in the band, The Bays, who produce improvised electronic music. With a repertoire inspired by electro-funk and hip hop, as Palm Skin Productions, Richmond has allowed his conceptual and energetic approach to shine through.

His debut track held tight to his layered and conceptual approach, as it was eleven minutes long and incorporated piano, drums, ambient sounds, and organic techno to enmesh endless hidden meanings in a complex story. Beyond his solo work, Richmond has created percussion for K-Creative, and collaborated with REM, The Art of Noise, Depeche Mode, and more, and been featured in performances around the world.

Now, his release of Other Times takes a non-conceptual approach, allowing him to bring together fragmented sounds and selected clips from archived and sessions and recordings. Forming a unified body of work from seemingly disparate sources, each song is made as a reference to his daily practice of swimming in the sea, as the titles allude to themes, and the music is composed to create an instrumental beat-tape.

A return to the hazy beats of Nickelman

Yuki Kitano hails from Osaka Japan, where the skateboarding culture helped lead him to the genre of hip-hop and to his first experimentations with the MPC2000XL drum machine. Now creating beat tape and lo-fi sound as Nickelman, Kitano has picked up more than 15 years of experience as an electric artist and remains on track and on task.

Instrumental beats tend to be where Nickelman carves out his place, filling his extensive discography up with tracks which contain both cool vibes and a warm heart. While each release takes on a slightly different style, the mellow mood is consistent throughout, and although many of the artist’s tracks are instrumental, those incorporating vocals and found sound do so with careful consideration, making sure they complement the daydream synth and bring character to the song.

Coming up on the horizon as a follow up to 2019’s ‘Elements’ LP is a 12 track release set for August, titled ‘Butterwax’. It’s from this LP that our featured track ‘Fly’ is taken, an early introduction to the next major collection of beats. It’s what Nickelman does best, thick with soft beats and light with low tempo melodies, finished by vocals to furnish the sound with a touch of humanity.

Laid back vibes from lofi producer- radicule

Straight from New York to your eardrums, 22 year old beat producer radicule cooks up well seasoned tracks with the right amount of dust and definition. With a taste beyond his years, radicule references old anime, 90s cartoons and classic video game tracks resulting in a hazy lofi sound that feels more like it belongs in a walkman than an mp3.

Fortunately for us, that lofi analog touch is now available through the beat compilation ‘Seasonal Sounds 5: Fall’ courtesy of Boston label - Dust Collectors. The compilation features 44 tracks of headnodding beats to pop in your cassette player and float away to. Expect a start-to-finish mix of diverse beats, nostalgic samples, and faded soundscapes.
