Exploring the Garden of Sound: The Artistry of Alaskan Tapes

Brady Kendall, the composer behind the musical project Alaskan Tapes, has built a substantial musical catalog with his attention to detail and acute creativity. He seamlessly blends ambient sound, striking string arrangements and unexpected guitar elements to create unique soundscapes made to envelope and enchant the listener. Alaskan Tapes' music can also be heard in a plethora of short films, including "Birth Pangs", “Childhood Trauma” and “Mag Sein” by Eliot Rausch, “ABADDON” by Rogerio Silva, and the new documentary "Harvest Season" by Bernardo Ruiz. With over 100 million streams, Brady continues to captivate audiences with his innovative vision, which is showcased in his 2023 full-length album, "Who Tends a Garden".

Inspired by an old book he found on a trip to the Adirondacks, "Who Tends a Garden" delves into the dual meaning of a garden, both literally and metaphorically. Whether digging into the dirt of one’s backyard or arranging soundscapes from seed to harvest, Kendall has cultivated an intimate album of warm tones and earthy atmosphere. The boundary between field recordings plucked from the natural world and strings and keys carefully pressed begins to fade away as the album unfolds into waves of texture and tone. With mastering from fellow Toronto musician Chad Skinner at Half Moon Audio, the final result is a 9 track journey of lush soundscapes and nourishing melodies.

Sonic Cinema 26- Music videos from Alaskan Tapes, Birrd, Mablanig

Who Tends A Garden is the latest upcoming album from composer Alaskan Tapes. Set to debut in January 2023, the Toronto based artist Brady Kendall takes a pared down approach in this new release. As an exploration of sound, the artist considers the garden of sounds he uses to make music—including piano, trumpets, synths, and production methods. Beyond the tools at hand, he explores what a garden means metaphorically, gaining inspiration from poet Louise Seymour Jones’s 1935 book, Who Loves A Garden. The accompanying video shows an overlaying of color, abstract shape, and light reflecting on the water to cast a meditative and solitary sense over the sound.

Birrd is the artist Stefan Vogel who produces electronic music that can fit myriad occasions, from underground clubs to sunny beachside parties. “Alba” is a climactic, storytelling piece of electronic music with an accompanying video that pays tribute to the art of sound. Directed by Vittorio Bettini and Romuald Sintes, the video features a refugee on a submarine who takes control with Birrd to fight the loneliness of their environment with music. Like Birrd’s typical style, the track features cosmic harmonies that incorporate the sounds of everyday life to create a personalized and melodic piece of techno.

Mablanig is the artist Bruno Cavellec who is based on the Isle of Man. “Have I Seen You Before?” is featured in the artist’s recent EP The Calling, which is a series of tracks that take on a personal tone in dedication to the musician’s parents, following a reflection on absence, loss, grief, and the nuance within the range of emotions. Mablanig’s downtempo music takes on a dream-like feel while being rooted in melody. This song embodies that ephemerality, and the accompanying video shows coastal landscapes with a colorful filter and filmy grain that feel like an escape to another world, dream state, or mind wandering daydream.
