Composer and musician Stray Theories produces a reflective space in his latest release

The New Zealand based artist’s well-considered and artfully composed album makes its mark on ambient music

Stray Theories has released his latest album This Light, featuring a watercolor painted cover that emits the aura of his sound. A solo-musical project by Micah Templeton-Wolfe, Stray Theories is the alias under which the artist has released most of his music over the last ten years. The Australian musician and composer began performing with bands at a young age, later developing his interests in music production and electronic music that would eventually mature to solidify his niche in the ambient music space. Currently based in New Zealand, Micah’s work has had a multimedia presence, appearing in film and documentary soundtracks, commercials, sound design projects, and art installations.

Initially releasing his first album Even Though We Sleep in 2012, he set a trajectory for a path that would emerge into a consistent musical career. Subsequently he released albums Those Who Remain in 2013, All that Was Lost in 2018, Fragments in 2019, and finally, the latest This is Light. Along the way, Stray Theories released a number of singles and EPs including ‘Empath’ earlier this year—a single track from the latest album—and his popular title ‘We Never Left’ in 2014.

This is Light is in keeping with the artist-composer’s home in the ambient, experimental space. Known for his cinematic soundscapes, this eight-track album emits themes of majesty, sympathy, and sincerity, while presenting in a confident and bold manner. The artist’s atmospheric and ambient sound takes inspiration from genres including minimal ambient, post-rock, shoegaze, and experimental electronica, to produce a mesmerizing, meditative experience.
