The beat focused producers release another effortless collection in their instrumental series

Mighty Joe and Isaiah are producers based in DC, but the sound and style they’ve been working on as the hip-hop beat duo ‘The Other Guys’ has forged connections across the country. The two have been deep in the beat community for a long time, bringing out vibes that glow with soul. The Other Guys specialise in music that gets heads nodding and energy flowing. Over the years they’ve lent their talents to areas like chill-hop, jazz-hop, boom-bap and study beats, keeping the vibe alive throughout.

A sound like that of The Other Guys draws a crowd, as well as other artists looking to collaborate. The two have found themselves working with the likes of Skyzoo, Tanya Morgan, Homeboy Sandman, J-Live, Substantial, Wordsworth, Young Roddy and Kooley High. New links mean new flavours, and the variety of artists featured on The Other Guys tracks has been nothing but beneficial to the duo’s growth and evolution.

Despite the frequency of joint projects, instrumental releases are dropped regularly by Joe and Isaiah, and it’s on such a collection that our featured track ‘Los Angeles Shorty’ has arrived. Slow and sweet, the song is one of seven low tempo tracks on the recent album ‘Summer In Analog: Season 2’.

Moshuss and Hanses take inspiration from Japanese pop culture for their beat album 'Poltergeist'

If there was ever any doubt that music styles in our current age are a global phenomenon, let Moshuss & Hanses put that to rest. The German duo’s debut release, ‘Poltergeist’, is classic American west coast beat scene, but produced entirely with Japanese samples. As is common with the style, Poltergeist is composed of 24 rapid-fire beats, none longer than 1:49. But there’s a wide variety of moods and feelings presented here, giving the release weight and texture that pull you in at the start of every new beat. There’s some Dilla-style sampling, some Q-Tip jazziness, classic Madlib texture, and a bit of Knxwledge whimsy to boot.

On the stand-out track ‘Sidmidak’, which you can stream above, Moshuss & Hanses deftly meld a heart-tugging orchestral arrangement with a classic rap beat that dances around the lush string harmonies. Label Fennek Records has pressed a small run of 10” vinyl, with 5 different woodcut-style illustration album covers, which match the timeless mood of the album well.

Slink on over to Bandcamp to hear the album in full, and pick up the vinyl release if you’re really feeling it.

A modern made in Japan classic with Sweet William's 'Jasmine Instrumentals'

Born in 1990, producer / beatmaker from Aichi Prefecture Sweet William took the Japanese hip hop scene by storm alongside Okinawan MC 唾奇 (Tsubaki) - with the release of their album ‘Jasmine’ in 2017.

The release received widespread support, largely for it’s smooth, expertly-crafted beats and head-nodding lyrical wordplay. But in many ways, it is the album’s deep and personal approach that makes it an honest gem of Japanese modern music. The album’s title ‘Jasmine’ refers to the local tea of Okinawa, which has been a favourite drink on the islands since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom for hundreds of years. The title sums up the sound and feel of the album well: a refreshing and fragrant experience with notes of nostalgia. The release is an invigorating start to finish listen with guest appearances from Fukuoka-born singer Kiki vivi lily and Tokyo rapper Jinmenusagi.

Following up this modern day classic is a recently released fresh perspective on the album - Jasmine Instrumentals. Stripping away all the extras to let Sweet William’s meticulous productions speak for themselves, the album contains velvety keys, crunchy beats and crisp samples. There’s even a bonus beat ‘Walkin’ (above) not previously found on the original album.

’Jasmine Instrumentals’ is highly recommended for any hip hop head, beat scene fan, or someone who just needs a good chill after a long week.
