French producer Trifouille1er blends beats, downtempo, chiptune and electronica into a tasty package with his new EP “Format malin”

Trifouille1er seems to be the type of artist whose work stands on experimentation; time spent playing with what works and what doesn’t, in order to create an end product where everything falls into place as if it was natural and effortless. Certainly that’s how Trifouille1er’s music sounds; effortless and with pure enjoyment of the resources and talent at his disposal.

Native to France, Trifouille1er’s background involves afro beat, hip hop and jazz. There’s a healthy respect for retro glitch and old school boom bap cultivated in his discography. His earlier EP in 2018 showed off his free style of production, and a desire to try things and play with his process of creation. The freshly released EP ‘Format Malin’ feels like a more condensed release, smooth enough that the risks Trifouille1er must have taken in its construction no longer feel like risks at all.

‘Nostalimbus’ was the teaser track for Format Malin. Here synth glows in a framework of percussion, soft and sweet like an otherworld ecosystem, a theme heightened by the alien-like retro samples which begin to warp in as the synthesiser finds its’ own structure toyed with. It’s a vibrant sound with genuine heart.

Dancefloor sound and charged discourse: VAPA drops ‘Envol Captif’

Listen here: https://Wiseband.lnk.to/VAPA-Envol-CaptifID VAPA - Envol Captif Réalisation: Perrine Drouillet INSTAGRAM: https://vapa.lnk.to/instagram FACEBOOK...

French music producer VAPA makes his presence felt on the dancefloor, with indie electronic and late night rhythmic patterns of synthesizer. Since 2017, VAPA has been pushing himself further into the scene through his series of often self-released singles, developing his following through digital promotion and word of mouth.

Purported to be created with the backing of significant experience with the study of musical theory and song writing, the tracks created through this solo project have consistently been layered with a careful hand. The core structures tend to be built around harmonic work and reverberating pulses, framework which VAPA then seeks to fill with themes of realise and realisation.

While VAPA demonstrates his refusal to limit his audio style with each track, he remains consistent in his inclusion of found sound, sampling from various journalists or well-known personalities. In this way he imbibes his work with the discourse of global issues, making successful attempts to remove the divide between dance floor music and the multifaceted reality of our modern world.

Now receiving greater recognition from French media, VAPA continues to spread his music and his political voice with the release of single ‘Envol Captif’.

Beyond The Hill's 'Granular Life' will turn your life into film

The debut EP from Japan’s 丘を越えて (Beyond The Hill), out now on 16:9 Recordings, is the perfect first release for a label ostensibly focusing on cinematic styles of music. 16:9 is of course the standard aspect ratio for High Definition digital video, and the EP’s title of ‘Granular Life’ is certainly evocative of one of the most distinct qualities of film, namely grain. But the title also goes beyond visual qualities, and can be taken more literally: these tracks were produced using granular synthesis techniques.

The opening track, Flicker Wind, (listen above) is a timeless ambient opener that would do well to accompany any number of tasks in daily life. It is at once precise in tone, and also flexible to interpretation. Think Boards of Canada in their more cinematic mode. The rest of the tracks on this EP only strengthen this comparison, expanding the Granular Life cinematic world in all directions. It’s a shame that such a carefully constructed world clocks in at under 15 minutes, just when you start to feel at home in its warm embrace. Nevertheless, it’s a strong first release from 16:9, and we’ll have to keep an eye on the label to see what they conjure up next.

Stream “Flicker Wind” above, and find the whole EP on 16:9 Recordings’ Bandcamp.
