Ocean depths through Swedish Ambience, AKB: Skymningszonen

With a potent and primal power at its heart, the music of AKB unfurls to light up forgotten places. Night walks, silent rooms and times of melancholy fit well with the echoing synth that Anna-Karin Berglund creates. A resident of Gävle, Sweden, Berglund works with sounds and samples mainly from an ambient perspective, looking to guide ponderous, heavy melodies into darkened territory.

The first release from AKB came in 2016, with the four track EP ‘Söndagsbarn’. The collection carried a cosmic vibe, and was produced with the support of Lamour Records, a label which has been working largely with electronica, ambience and conceptual techno since 2012. The organisation is originally from the same area of Sweden as AKB, which may be a factor in the continued relationship between the two parties.

Lamour Records were also the label AKB chose for the release of her much more recent album, ‘Marianergraven’ (Mariana Trench). An eight track release, Marianergraven explores a calm descent into deep waters. Synthesisers, loops, and (like AKB’s earlier work) a touch of the cosmic create an ambience which is slow, but consuming. The track featured here is Skymningszonen, in which elements of drone describe an underlying power, and leave the listener at the edge of something greater.
